Gardening 🌱planting my herbs 🪴💦

... Read moreStarting my indoor herb garden has been such a game-changer for my kitchen and my well-being! There's something incredibly satisfying about having fresh basil, mint, and especially thyme, right at my fingertips. I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed at first, wondering if I had the green thumb for it, but honestly, it's simpler than you might think. It's amazing how much joy a little bit of green can bring, especially when you're focusing on #plantingandhealing. One of the first questions I had when I brought my little herb plants home from Lowe's was about general care. For most herb plants, the key is good light and proper drainage. I found that a sunny windowsill or a spot under a grow light works wonders. Make sure your pots have drainage holes to prevent root rot. I use a good quality potting mix designed for containers, which typically has perlite or vermiculite to keep it from getting too compacted. Now, let's talk about thyme – my absolute favorite for cooking! Many of you might be wondering how often to water thyme indoors. My personal rule of thumb is to check the soil moisture every few days. Thyme prefers its soil to dry out slightly between waterings. I stick my finger about an inch into the soil; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Overwatering is a common mistake that can lead to root rot, so it's better to err on the side of slightly dry than constantly soggy. In warmer months, or if your home is very dry, you might need to water more frequently. In winter, when growth slows down, I cut back on watering. It’s all about observing your plant and its environment. Another herb I've been experimenting with, especially after seeing it in the queries, is St. John's Wort. While often seen as an outdoor plant, you can definitely grow it in a large container indoors or on a balcony. If you're looking into pruning St. John's Wort, whether it's in the UK or elsewhere, the general principles are similar. I usually prune mine to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. The best time to do a more significant prune is in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. You can cut back about a third of the plant's height, especially any leggy or woody stems. Throughout the growing season, I'll snip off spent flowers to encourage more blooms and keep the plant looking tidy. Regular light pruning helps keep the plant healthy and productive, ensuring it doesn't take up too much precious "space" if you're like me and have limited room! Caring for these herb plants has become a simple, meditative part of my daily routine. It's not just about the fresh flavors; it's about connecting with nature, even if it's just a small pot on my windowsill. It truly brings a sense of calm and makes me feel like I’m nurturing something beautiful and useful. It's a reminder that sometimes, the simplest things in life, like watching a tiny herb sprout, can bring the most profound satisfaction.
