📖 Name of the Book: Slewfoot

📄 Plot: To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help. Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan – one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake.

📖 Genre: Horror

📄 My Favorite Quotes:

🕷️I am not Abitha. Abitha was murdered. I am the witch, and the witch cares not for your tears.

🕷️As at least cruelty was a thing that could be pointed out, confronted. But this belief, this absolute conviction that this evil they were doing was good, was God’s work—how, she wondered, how could such a dark conviction ever be overcome?

💭 My Thoughts: I loved this book everything about it really drew me in. The characters in this book were amazing and so interesting I felt so passionate about how much I hated some and loved others. Between Samson trying to figure out who he truly is, Abitha trying to save her farm and deciding if what path she is on is good or evil, and Wallace doing everything in his power to ruin Abitha, everything just plays out so perfectly to a well deserved ending. I had so much hate towards certain characters that reading the end of this book gave me so much satisfaction. I highly recommend this book.

⭐ Star Rating: 5 /5 ⭐️

... Read moreHaving devoured Brom's *Slewfoot*, I'm still reeling from its atmospheric grip and profound themes. Beyond the thrilling plot, what truly captivated me was the master storytelling intertwined with Brom's unique artistic vision. It's not just a book; it's an experience where the narrative and vivid imagery fuse to create something truly unforgettable. Brom, being an illustrator himself, imbues his prose with an incredible visual quality. As I read, I could almost see the "red-haired woman with goat legs sitting on a broomstick" from the cover come to life, embodying the clash of worlds central to the story. The descriptions of the New England wilderness and the rigid Puritan settlement are so palpable, you can almost feel the chill in the air and the weight of judgmental stares. This visual richness, often hinted at through the chilling portrayal of "horned, blue-green creatures" or a "shadowy, horned figure," elevates the horror from mere jump scares to a deeply unsettling psychological experience. It makes you wonder if these powerful images are what inspire people to look for "slewfoot illustrations" or "slewfoot pictures" online, trying to further immerse themselves in this dark world. One of the most fascinating aspects is the exploration of good versus evil, and how easily those lines can be blurred by fear and fanaticism. Abitha's journey, from a vulnerable outcast to a woman embracing her own power amidst accusations of "bewitchery," is a powerful commentary on societal control and individual agency. The book brilliantly dissects the suffocating grip of the Puritan community, where any deviation from their strict dogma is deemed an act of the "devil." It forces you to question who the real monsters are – the supernatural entity or the humans consumed by their own righteous cruelty. I found myself pondering the character of the Slewfoot itself. Is it truly a malevolent force, or merely a misunderstood entity drawn into human conflicts, becoming a mirror for their own darkness? The narrative masterfully maintains this ambiguity, making the horror all the more potent. The way Brom crafts the "slewfoot summary" within the story, through town gossip and fear-mongering, shows how easily truth can be twisted. The underlying themes of nature worship versus strict religious adherence also deeply resonated. The untamed wilderness, often seen as a place of danger and temptation by the Puritans, becomes a source of ancient power and connection for Abitha. This stark contrast, perfectly echoed in the mystical elements and the grim historical setting, makes Slewfoot more than just a horror novel; it's a profound look into the human psyche and the enduring power of myth. If you're looking for a book that will challenge your perceptions and stay with you long after the final page, I can't recommend Brom's unique "tale of bewitchery" enough. It's a dark, beautiful, and utterly compelling read that begs for discussion.
