In dedication to my first cat

Losing Middle was incredibly difficult, and while my heart still aches, reflecting on his 14 amazing years brings so much comfort. It makes me think back to when he was just a tiny kitten, a little fluffball I watched come into the world. If you're lucky enough to witness a kitten's birth or bring a new one home, there are so many wonders to discover! I remember trying to figure out all the little details about him, and it brought so much joy. For new pet parents, sometimes even telling if a kitten is a boy or girl can be a fun challenge, especially if you have a whole litter like I did with Middle's siblings. Generally, male kittens often have a more noticeable space between their anus and genital opening, forming a colon shape (:), while females have a closer, more vertical slit or inverted exclamation mark appearance (!). It's usually easier to tell once they're a few weeks old, but even then, sometimes you need a vet's keen eye to be absolutely sure! I also found myself observing his development closely. Estimating a kitten's age by their teeth? That’s another fascinating aspect of early development that helps you understand their milestones. Kittens usually start getting their deciduous (baby) teeth around 2-3 weeks old, starting with incisors, then canines, and premolars by 6-8 weeks. By the time they're 4-6 months old, those baby teeth start falling out and are replaced by permanent adult teeth. Middle had the cutest little puppy teeth when he was tiny, and watching them come in was part of his early charm. This knowledge really helped us understand his growth stages and ensured he was developing properly, signaling when it was time for certain vet checks or diet changes. Beyond these little biological markers, those early weeks and months are all about bonding and building trust. Middle grew into such a character – he was truly "My best friend," just as I often thought of him. He was indeed so beautiful, and his early antics, like trying to play fetch even as a tiny cat, were just glimpses of the amazing dog-like personality he'd develop. Those 'MEOW Relaxing Cooll' moments, as I'd sometimes jokingly call them, started early on, with him finding the warmest, sunniest spots to nap, totally at peace. We spent countless hours just observing him, learning his quirks, and fostering that deep connection. Even now, looking at the beautiful necklace we had made, which holds "My angels ashes," I remember every single stage of his life, from that tiny, curious kitten to the majestic, loving cat he became. It's a reminder to cherish every single moment because they truly fly by. Every purr, every playful swat, every sleepy cuddle builds those 'heartfelt memories' that stay with you forever. It's not just about their physical development; it's about the unique, irreplaceable bond you forge from day one. And even though Middle is gone, his memory continues to inspire me to appreciate every pet I've had and to advocate for loving and understanding our feline companions, especially in their vulnerable early stages.
