Pickle Christmas Tree Appetizer

I have wanted to make a Pickle Christmas Tree for years, and I am SO pleased with how it turned out! 🎄

This Christmas appetizer honestly turned out EVEN cuter than I could have imagined!  What do you think?!

💻As *almost* always, the recipe is on my blog, with step-by-step photos and a recipe printable option.

📖If easy holiday recipes are your love language, my cookbook Celebrating Every Day is packed with them. 💛

Pickle Christmas Tree Appetizer

Ingredients

• Baby pickles, various sizes (about 2 jars, 24 oz each)

• Baby dill pickles (about 8 jars, 16 oz each)

• 1 container cherry tomatoes (10 oz)

• Small block of cheddar cheese

• Fresh rosemary

• Toothpicks

• 11.9 inch crafting foam cone

• Plastic wrap

Instructions

1. Prep the cone

Wrap the foam cone in plastic wrap and set it on a plate or board.

2. Sort the pickles

Group pickles from largest to smallest, saving the tiniest for the top.

3. Build the base

Insert a toothpick near the bottom, press on a pickle, and repeat around the cone.

Tip: Place pickles with the small end up and curved side out.

4. Work upward

Continue adding rows with slightly smaller pickles, overlapping each row and filling gaps as you go.

5. Create the top

Add 4–6 toothpicks at the top and attach the smallest pickles.

6. Decorate

Add cherry tomatoes on toothpicks as ornaments.

7. Add the star

Cut a cheddar cheese star and secure it to the top with a toothpick.

8. Finish

Add fresh rosemary around the base for a festive look.

A quick reminder… this is held together with toothpicks, so be sure guests know before digging in!

... Read moreMaking this adorable Pickle Christmas Tree was such a joy, and honestly, it's become my new favorite holiday tradition! While the basic recipe is fantastic, I've got a few extra tips and tricks I picked up along the way that can make your pickle tree even more spectacular, especially if you're planning a full-blown holiday gathering or looking for ways to personalize it. First off, let's talk about making this ahead of time. Holiday parties can be hectic, right? I've found you can assemble your pickle tree a few hours in advance. Just be sure to wrap it loosely with plastic wrap and keep it chilled in the fridge. This helps the pickles stay crisp and the cheese star firm. If you're traveling with it, I recommend assembling it at your destination if possible, or transporting the prepped cone and pickles separately, then doing the final assembly. It helps prevent any accidental pickle mishaps along the way! For those of you who love to customize, the possibilities for your pickle tree are endless! While dill pickles are classic, don't shy away from experimenting. I've seen some absolutely stunning trees made with a mix of sweet gherkins and dill pickles, creating a lovely color contrast. You could also incorporate small pickled onions or even mini bell pepper slices for extra bursts of color. And for the 'ornaments'? Instead of just cherry tomatoes, try pimento-stuffed green olives, small black olives, or even tiny cubes of mozzarella or provolone cheese on toothpicks. For the cheese star, while cheddar is great, a slice of provolone or even a spiced pepper jack could add a fun twist. Using different cookie cutter shapes for the top, like a tiny bell or an angel, is another cute idea! Thinking about 'pickle party ideas' beyond just the tree? This appetizer is fantastic on its own, but it truly shines when paired with a few complementary items. I love serving it alongside a platter of artisanal crackers and maybe some crusty baguette slices. For dips, a creamy dill dip or a homemade ranch dressing would be absolutely divine with the pickles. You could even offer a small bowl of honey mustard for those who like a sweet and tangy kick. It's also a great centerpiece for a larger spread of finger foods, like mini quiches, sausage rolls, or a simple cheese board. Finally, remember that this pickle tree is not just a dish; it's a conversation starter! Every time I've brought it to a party, guests inevitably gather around, marveling at its festive charm. It's surprisingly easy to make, looks incredibly impressive, and offers a refreshing, tangy alternative to heavier holiday fare. So go ahead, embrace the pickle power this holiday season – you won't regret it!
