PART II: Aesthetic Apps
Here is part 2! If you haven’t seen it, go check out part 1 to see how I made my app icons aesthetic using only Canva (no other special apps required). Now we will be changing our apps on our phone/Ipad using the photos we made in Canva!
1. Open the shortcuts app.
2. Select the + at the top right.
3. Select “Scripting”.
4. Select “Open App”.
5. Tap “Apps” to select the app you want to create a shortcut for.
6. Rename your shortcut.
7. Select “Add to Home Screen”.
8. Select the photo icon then “Choose photo”
9. Arrange your Home Screen however you like!
It’s that simple. And with the new update you can create all kinds of widgets to add to your Home Screen as well. What do you think?

Hey everyone! So glad you're here for Part 2 of my aesthetic app icon journey! After creating those super cute designs in Canva, the next step is bringing them to life on your actual phone or iPad. But before we dive into the Shortcuts app, let's chat a bit more about making those icons truly pop and answering some questions I often get. First off, why bother with aesthetic app icons anyway? For me, it's all about making my digital space feel truly *mine*. My phone home screen is something I look at countless times a day, and having it reflect my personal style, whether it’s cozy autumn vibes or sleek minimalist chic, just brings a little joy to my routine. It's like decorating a room, but for your digital world! If you're wondering where to even start finding icons or design elements within Canva, you're not alone! Canva is a treasure trove. When I'm designing my app icons, I usually head straight to the 'Elements' tab. You can search for almost anything – 'minimalist icon,' 'floral drawing,' 'line art,' or even specific themes like 'vintage aesthetic.' Play around with keywords! I often start with a plain background, add a graphic, and then find a font that matches my overall home screen theme. Remember, for an app icon, simpler is often better so it's recognizable at a glance. I usually aim for a square canvas, around 500x500 pixels, to ensure clarity when it scales down. This helps your custom Canva app icons look crisp! Another common question is about getting those perfect 'Canva icon aesthetic' vibes. It's all about consistency! Pick a color palette you love – Canva has fantastic pre-made palettes, or you can create your own. Then, try to use similar graphic styles across all your icons. For example, if you love line art, stick to line art. If you prefer watercolor, go with that. This creates a cohesive look that ties your entire home screen together. Don't forget that your custom icons will eventually live next to other apps, so think about how they'll blend, or intentionally stand out! Once your icons are designed, remember to save them as high-quality PNGs. This ensures they look sharp when you add them to your home screen via the Shortcuts app, as described in the main tutorial. And speaking of the main tutorial, make sure you have all your chosen images saved in a dedicated album or easily accessible folder on your device. It makes the 'Choose Photo' step so much smoother! Beyond just icons, did you know you can also customize widgets? The new updates allow for so much more personalization. I love using apps like Widgetsmith or Color Widgets to create custom photo widgets or even calendar displays that perfectly match my aesthetic. Combining custom app icons with matching widgets truly elevates the entire home screen experience. It's not just about changing an icon; it's about curating your whole digital environment to feel inspiring and beautiful. So, if you’ve been looking for ways to make your iPhone or iPad home screen feel more 'you,' diving into Canva for icon design and then using the Shortcuts app is definitely the way to go. It’s a fun little DIY project that makes a big difference every time you unlock your device!
