My Mother’s Softness, My Grandmother’s Fire

I carry my mother’s softness and my grandmother’s fire and some days I don’t even notice it until it shows up in the smallest ways.

I didn’t grow up thinking I was strong. I thought I was sensitive.

But now I know that is strength.

The way I check on others, the way I sit with silence, the way I know when I’ve had enough without having to yell. That’s her.

That’s both of them. That’s me.

One day, I stood up for myself and didn’t shrink back.

That’s when it clicked: this isn’t new… this is legacy.

I’m not inventing strength I’m remembering it.

And now? I honor it by protecting my energy.

By showing up fully.

By being soft and staying grounded in fire.

My mother embodied a gentle authority, calming those around her with quiet strength. Her lessons of compassion and emotional intelligence serve as a guiding light in my own journey. Similarly, my grandmother's fierce spirit, characterized by unwavering conviction, taught me the power of setting boundaries and asserting oneself without raising a voice. Together, these legacies create a balance within me. Understanding that it's okay to embrace sensitivity while being assertive shifts the narrative around traditional notions of strength. This duality allows for a deeper connection with oneself and others. It invites reflection on how we can honor our kin by recognizing their traits within us and acting from that authentic place. Cultivating this balance of softness and fire can empower one to navigate life's challenges gracefully, transforming perceived vulnerabilities into sources of resilience. Engaging in practices like self-care, mindful breathing, and intentional pauses can enhance this journey. Lighting a candle to create a safe space or gently walking away from negativity are acts of honoring both softness and strength. By recognizing that these traits are inherently ours, we foster a more compassionate existence both for ourselves and those around us. This journey of self-discovery and honoring one's ancestry ultimately leads to a more fulfilled and empowered life.
