McDonald falls
Hey everyone! I just got back from an absolutely magical trip to Glacier National Park in Montana, and I have to tell you about one of my favorite discoveries: McDonald Falls. If you're planning a visit to this stunning national park, or even just dreaming about it, make sure this beautiful waterfall is on your itinerary. You'll find McDonald Falls nestled within the park, easily accessible from the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road near Lake McDonald. Don't confuse it with a fast-food joint – this McDonald is purely natural beauty! It's located on the Johns Lake Loop Trail, which is a fantastic, relatively easy hike perfect for families or anyone looking for a refreshing stroll through the forest. What makes McDonald Falls so special? For me, it was the incredible vibrant colors of the rocks beneath the clear, rushing water. These aren't just ordinary grey stones; they come alive with shades of red, green, and blue, especially when wet. It's a geological marvel formed by ancient glacial activity and mineral deposits. Standing there, listening to the roar of the water and seeing those incredible hues, felt like stepping into a painting. Getting there is part of the adventure. The Johns Lake Loop Trail is about 1.8 miles round trip and offers a gentle elevation gain. You can often start from the Avalanche Creek trailhead parking area, or there are smaller parking spots closer to the Johns Lake trailhead itself. Be sure to arrive early, especially during peak season (July-August), as parking fills up quickly. I recommend going in the morning for fewer crowds and beautiful soft light for photos. Beyond the falls, the trail itself is lovely, winding through old-growth cedar and hemlock forests. You'll pass Johns Lake, a serene spot perfect for a quiet moment. After visiting McDonald Falls, I highly encourage you to spend some time by Lake McDonald itself. The colorful rocks continue along its shores, and it's a perfect place for skipping stones or simply soaking in the immense beauty of Glacier National Park. My Quick Tips for Visiting McDonald Falls: Wear comfortable shoes: Even though it's an easy trail, sturdy footwear is always a good idea. Bring water: Stay hydrated, especially in warmer months. Camera ready: You'll want to capture those incredible colors! A polarized filter can really make the rock colors pop in photos. Check park conditions: Always check the Glacier National Park website for current trail conditions, road closures, and any bear activity warnings before you go. Leave No Trace: Help keep this incredible place pristine by packing out everything you pack in. McDonald Falls truly is a gem within Glacier National Park, offering a blend of accessible hiking and unique natural beauty that shouldn't be missed. It was a highlight of my Montana adventure, and I hope it will be for yours too!
