February was national sheep month! Here’s some of my favorite sheep facts!
Sheep hold a significant role in agriculture around the world, with their population contributing heavily to both the meat and wool industries. As of 2024, the U.S. sheep population is estimated at over 5.03 million, producing approximately 129 million pounds of lamb and mutton. Interestingly, the global sheep population stands at about 1.285 billion. One of the most fascinating traits of sheep is their exceptional eyesight; they can see behind themselves without turning their heads, which is crucial for spotting predators. Additionally, sheep have a remarkable memory, being able to recognize up to 50 different faces. They communicate primarily through scent, which allows them to identify each other and their environment from great distances. February’s designation as National Sheep Month serves as a reminder of the importance of sheep farming in both local economies and global food systems. Understanding these incredible animals enhances our connection to agriculture and highlights the need for responsible farming practices.
