Stepping into the morning with a heart open to God's word can truly set the tone for the day, especially when facing life's toughest challenges. This morning, I found myself drawn to Matthew 5:44-45 King James Version, a scripture that asks us to do the seemingly impossible: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” Honestly, when my heart's a battleground from past hurts, loving those who've wronged me feels like an insurmountable task. It's natural to feel that pull towards a ‘prayer for retribution,’ wishing for justice or vindication. But this scripture challenges that instinct, reminding us of a higher calling. Instead of asking for harm upon them, I'm learning to pray for release from the bitterness within myself, asking for the grace to forgive. As the prayer in my meditation states, confessing human frailty and asking for forgiveness for holding onto retribution is the first step towards healing. This isn't about excusing harmful actions, but about freeing ourselves from the cycle of anger. It’s about embodying the courage to extend grace and reflect Christ's love, even towards adversaries. Often, this journey begins with a 'prayer of quiet,' where I simply sit in God’s presence, allowing His peace to wash over the internal turmoil. It’s in these moments of quiet surrender that I remember that God's mercy and unconditional love are boundless, and I find myself echoing the sentiment: 'Who is like you, oh Lord, who is like you? The weight of who you are compels me to seek this deeper love.' Incorporating these powerful truths into both my morning scripture reading and evening verses helps ground me. Starting the day with the intention to love and forgive, even when it's hard, equips me to face whatever comes. And as the day ends, reflecting on good night scripture allows me to release any lingering resentments, asking God to guide me along a path of love that leads to freedom and reconciliation. It's a daily practice, a continuous journey of allowing God to transform my heart from a place of conflict to one of compassionate strength. Amen.
