Slingin’ math content by day & coaching by night

My journey with math started in 6th grade with a teacher who ignited my passion. Over time, my love for math grew.

Although I initially aimed for engineering in college, my heart belonged to math.

After a stint as a contract administrator, I realized sitting at a desk wasn’t for me.

I wanted to coach basketball and teaching math was how I could achieve it.

Teaching math and coaching basketball has allowed me to share both of my passions with others.

... Read moreTeaching and coaching are more than just professions; they are platforms for inspiration and motivation. Math is a subject that can unlock creativity and develop critical thinking skills. As someone who has transitioned from a traditional office job to a vocation that encompasses teaching mathematics and coaching basketball, I understand the importance of mentorship in both fields. The excitement of teaching math lies in making complex concepts accessible and engaging, while coaching basketball allows for fostering teamwork and discipline among young athletes. Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that teaching math effectively involves utilizing innovative methods, such as integrating real-world applications and utilizing technology. For instance, digital tools are increasingly essential in lesson plans to help students visualize mathematical problems and solutions. Pairing this with my coaching experience, I aim to inspire students both on the court and in the classroom. Creating a supportive environment is key; it allows students to build confidence not only in their mathematical abilities but also in their skills as a team player. Moreover, the world of mathematics extends beyond typical classroom learning. It intersects with various career paths, from engineering to data science. Emphasizing this can open doors for students, providing them with a broader understanding of how mathematics applies in real life. Sharing my dual passion for math and sports has enriched my teaching approach, allowing students to see the relevance of their studies in various aspects of life. I encourage connections between school subjects and extracurricular activities, paving the way for a more holistic educational experience. Let us continue to share ideas and experiences that enhance our understanding of math and sports. Feel free to engage in the comments with your own journeys or insights into these fields!
