ICE Arrests Daycare Worker in Front of Kids
A daycare worker was arrested by armed agents in front of young children, sparking shock, tears and calls for accountability.
Here’s how the dramatic scene unfolded and why it matters.
1. Who & Where
The incident took place Wednesday morning (Nov 5, 2025) at Rayito de Sol Early Learning Center, a Spanish-immersion preschool on the north side of Chicago.
Witnesses say a daycare teacher, identified by some sources as a Colombian national with valid work documentation, was apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents just as drop-off time began.
2. The Scene & What Happened
Around 7 a.m., parents arriving to drop off children noticed agents wearing vests marked “POLICE ICE” who entered the parking lot and followed the teacher into the daycare’s vestibule.
Video and witness accounts show the teacher running into the building, then being seized between glass doors while stating in Spanish: “Tengo papeles!” (“I have papers!”)
Witnesses say agents went beyond the vestibule — reportedly walking through classrooms and questioning teachers with children present, though the agency says they acted in a public drop-off area and had legal basis for a traffic stop.
The daycare closed for the day amid parent protests and emotional scenes: young children crying, parents in shock, staff consoling each other.
3. Reactions
Chicago officials and child-care advocates blasted the operation as “terrifying” and a violation of safe-space norms for children. Alderman Matt Martin said the raid “should send shivers down the spine of every parent.”
ICE and the Department of Homeland Security maintain the action was part of a traffic stop on a vehicle registered to a “female illegal alien,” and the daycare was not the primary target.
Should immigration authorities ever conduct arrests inside day-care facilities while children are present, even if their target is alleged to be unlawful?
And: How should the balance be struck between enforcing laws and protecting children’s sense of safety in schools and early learning centers?
