Fit over Fifty
Let’s gooo
Okay, so who else felt that little jolt when they hit the big 5-0? For me, it wasn't just another birthday; it was a wake-up call. I realized that if I wanted to continue living my best life, full of energy and without aches and pains, I needed to get serious about my fitness goals. It's not about being a gym rat or looking 20 again, but about feeling strong, capable, and healthy in my own skin. One of the biggest things I've learned is that fitness over 50 is different. Our bodies change, our metabolism shifts, and what worked in our 30s might not be the best approach now. For women especially, bone density and muscle mass become crucial. That's why my focus has shifted dramatically. Instead of just endless cardio, I've really embraced strength training. It's been a game-changer! Lifting weights, even light ones, a few times a week has made me feel so much more powerful and stable. I'm not afraid to 'Push Harder' when I know my body can take it, but I also listen when it needs rest. Setting realistic goals is key. My initial goal wasn't to run a marathon, but to be able to walk up a few flights of stairs without getting winded, or to play with my grandkids without feeling completely exhausted afterwards. Now, I aim for three strength training sessions, two brisk walks or cycle rides, and one day of stretching or yoga each week. It's flexible, it's achievable, and it makes me feel good. Don't compare your journey to anyone else's; focus on your progress and how you feel. Nutrition also plays a huge role. I've found that focusing on whole, unprocessed foods, getting enough protein for muscle repair, and staying hydrated makes a massive difference in my energy levels and recovery. It’s not about strict diets, but sustainable, healthy eating habits. If you're a woman over 50 looking to get fit, remember that every small step counts. Start where you are, be kind to yourself, but also challenge yourself. You'll be amazed at what you can achieve!
