... Read moreHey everyone! Since my last update about my loc'd journey, I’ve been getting so many questions about how my locs have managed to flourish and what my secrets are. You know I love sharing, so let's dive a little deeper into this amazing experience. When I said "DRINK YOUR WATER 💦 AND MIND YOUR BUSINESS! 💆🏽‍♀️," I wasn't just being sassy – it's truly the foundation of my loc care philosophy! Hydration from within is absolutely crucial for healthy hair growth, and that includes your locs. Think of your hair as a plant; if you don't water it, it wethers. Staying hydrated helps keep your scalp healthy, which is where all the magic starts for strong, vibrant locs. I make sure to drink at least 8 glasses a day, and I've noticed a significant difference in how soft and supple my locs feel, not to mention the overall health of my scalp. "Minding your business" for your locs means learning to leave them alone sometimes! In the early stages, especially, it’s tempting to constantly touch, twist, or re-twist. But over-manipulation can lead to thinning, breakage, and even traction alopecia. My journey taught me the beauty of patience. Let your locs do their thing, trust the process, and only re-twist when necessary, allowing enough time for new growth to emerge. This hands-off approach has been a game-changer for me, letting my locs mature beautifully without unnecessary stress. Speaking of maturation, many of you asked about the "how long have you been loca" aspect, and how locs change over time. My almost four-year journey has definitely seen its stages! When I first started, they were those tiny, delicate starter locs, full of potential. Then came the 'budding' phase, where they started to form and feel a bit fuzzy – this is where the magic truly begins! The 'teenager' phase followed, often the most challenging as they might look a bit unruly, but it's a crucial time for them to establish their structure. Now, nearing my four-year mark, I consider them mature locs. They're strong, they've dropped, and they have their own unique personality. Each stage has its own beauty and lessons. Beyond water and patience, my daily routine for keeping my locs flourishing involves a few simple steps. I make sure to moisturize regularly with a light rosewater spray or a natural oil blend to prevent dryness. Washing is also essential – I use a clarifying shampoo to keep my scalp clean and free of build-up, followed by a moisturizing conditioner (rinsed thoroughly, of course!). Protective styling has been a lifesaver too; updos, braids, or scarves help protect my locs from the elements and reduce daily wear and tear. Being a "locd girly" isn't just about the hair; it's a lifestyle, a statement of confidence and natural beauty. It's about embracing authenticity. My locs have given me a new sense of freedom and self-expression, allowing me to experiment with so many looks while celebrating my natural texture. If you're on your own loc journey, or just thinking about starting, remember these two things: patience is key, and nurture your locs from the inside out. You’ve got this, and your locs will thank you!
