Am I the only one noticing that it’s our people tearing down our people?
I’ve often found myself reflecting on the heartbreaking reality behind the phrase, "tearing down our own people." It’s a phenomenon where individuals within the same community or group become their own harshest critics, sometimes leading to division and disillusionment. From my personal experience, this behavior usually stems from underlying frustrations, generational misunderstandings, or a collective feeling of powerlessness. In many cases, when people within a community feel ignored or marginalized by external systems, the pent-up frustration gets misdirected inward. Instead of channeling energy toward building each other up or advocating for change, some resort to criticism and even hostility against their peers. I’ve seen this dynamic in workplaces, social groups, and especially within cultural communities where the pain of historical and systemic challenges runs deep. One way to combat this tendency is through open, empathetic communication. Encouraging honest conversations about shared struggles and goals can foster understanding rather than division. Personally, I’ve found that taking time to listen, validate others' experiences, and focusing on collective upliftment helps reduce these internal conflicts. Another important element is highlighting our shared values and strengths. When people recognize their common roots and aspirations, it becomes harder to justify tearing each other down. Instead, there’s a stronger push toward supporting one another's growth and success. Lastly, self-awareness and critical reflection are crucial. Questioning why we react negatively toward those close to us—sometimes even subconsciously—can reveal deeply held biases and fears. This process allows for personal growth and stronger bonds within the community. Overall, moving away from destructive behaviors and toward solidarity requires intentional effort and compassion. It’s not always easy, but the benefits of a united and supportive community are worth striving for.
