My 29th Birthday Trip to Mexico

For my birthday my husband said I could do anything I wanted as long as it was under $1,000. After thinking of different things to do in our city I quickly realized as long as I could find something under 1K for the two of us I could actually do anything & go anywhere! I wanted to have a great 29th birthday to celebrate my last year in my 20s. It feels a little weird saying that. I feel like I was just turning 17 yesterday and now I’m almost 30. I hope this is going to be a year of self discovery but right now I kinda feel more lost than ever. I guess we’ll see how this year goes.

I was able to find us a trip to Cozumel, Mexico. We stayed at Hotel B Unique (an Adults only Resort) I have another post about the hotel on my page. While in Mexico we were able to see Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum.

To book the trip:

I used my two favorite travel sites Going (formerly known as Scott’s Cheap Flights) & Expedia.

Going - Going helps you find deals on flights they’re powered through Google Flights. I love it so much they find all the price drops & mistake fares. You can search deals leaving from your specific airport or any airport. You can search for specific months. You can also sort by domestic or international. If you’re more open on traveling to new places instead of a specific place in mind this is an amazing tool. (I’ll make a separate post on just this site)

Expedia- Expedia can get you great deals on hotels if you bundle them with your flight. A lot of the time they come with perks depending on what tier reward member you are. Like free room upgrades or free breakfast/parking. This hotel came with a $40 food/beverage voucher for us and a complimentary breakfast. It was great and helped us save money on food.

Total expense for round trip flight & hotel for 2 was $930

Just like my recent birthday trip to Mexico for under $1,000 for both flights & hotel, it's entirely possible to create unforgettable memories on a budget. Many people dream of far-flung destinations, and I'm here to tell you that with a bit of savvy planning, you can make it happen! When searching for birthday trip ideas or places to go for your birthday out of town, flexibility is your best friend. Instead of fixating on one specific spot, be open to different budget-friendly Caribbean vacations or even exploring some of the best and cheap islands to visit. Tools like Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights) are game-changers for finding those incredible flight deals. I always recommend setting up price alerts for a few different destinations you're interested in. You might be surprised at what pops up! For accommodation, bundling flights and hotels through sites like Expedia can lead to substantial savings, often coming with perks like free breakfast or resort credits, much like the $40 food voucher we received at Hotel B Unique - Adults in Cozumel. Exploring adults-only options can sometimes offer a more serene experience at a competitive price. My trip allowed us to experience not just Cozumel, but also nearby Playa del Carmen and Tulum. These areas offer a fantastic mix of history, natural beauty, and vibrant culture, making them perfect for a birthday weekend getaway. In Tulum, for example, beyond the famous ruins, you can find incredible cenotes – natural swimming holes – which are often very affordable or even free to access if you know where to look. For those interested in natural attractions, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve near Tulum is a UNESCO World Heritage site offering incredible wildlife and serene lagoons. While a guided tour might be an investment, you can often find more budget-friendly ways to explore its fringes or simply enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. If you're looking for other charming, cheap islands to visit, consider places like Isla Mujeres, just a short ferry ride from Cancun. It offers a laid-back vibe, beautiful beaches, and golf cart rentals for easy, affordable exploration – a great alternative for a day trip or even a couple of nights if you want to extend your Mexico vacation. Ultimately, the key to a successful budget birthday trip is focusing on experiences. Whether it's snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, exploring ancient ruins like those in Tulum, or simply enjoying a beautiful view from our balcony, these moments are priceless. Don't let the idea of a big budget deter you from celebrating your special day with an adventure. With smart planning, your own birthday getaway can be just as memorable and affordable as mine.
