Founders Day at Spelman College isn't just another date on the calendar; for those of us who've walked its hallowed halls, it's a deeply meaningful celebration. It’s a moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate the incredible vision and tenacity of the women who dared to dream big for future generations of Black women. Many often ask, 'Who founded Spelman College?' and 'When was Spelman founded?' Our story begins in 1881, when two extraordinary women, Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles, from Massachusetts, arrived in Atlanta with a singular mission. They envisioned an institution dedicated to educating formerly enslaved women and girls. Starting with just 11 students in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church, their dedication laid the groundwork for what would become the world-renowned Spelman College. It was a bold and necessary endeavor, born out of a profound commitment to education and empowerment in a post-Reconstruction South. These pioneering women, Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles, were not just educators; they were revolutionaries. They recognized the immense potential within Black women and fought tirelessly to provide them with the knowledge and skills to lead, uplift their communities, and make their mark on the world. Their initial focus on literacy, domestic skills, and religious instruction evolved as the needs of the students and society changed, eventually leading to a full liberal arts curriculum. For a Spelman alumna, Founders Day is a deeply personal experience. It's a day when you truly feel the spirit of sisterhood and the weight of the legacy you carry forward, whether you're posing in your blue Spelman College t-shirt or simply reflecting from afar.
