Just wanted to explain a bit about why ceramic pieces can sometimes have uneven colors and why they’re more prone to cracks compared to clay pieces.
🎨Color Issues:
🏺Ceramics: When we glaze ceramics, the glaze melts in the kiln at super high temperatures and forms a glass-like surface. If the glaze isn’t applied evenly, it can move around and settle in weird ways, causing color differences. Plus, the ceramic body itself absorbs water unevenly, which can mess with the glaze’s distribution. Also, the kiln’s atmosphere (whether it’s more oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor) can change the glaze’s color. Any unevenness in this atmosphere makes the color inconsistent.
🥣Clay: For clay, we usually just paint it and let it dry at lower temperatures. The pigments stay more stable and don’t flow around like ceramic glazes, so the color stays even.
⛓️💥Cracking Problems:
🏺Ceramics: We fire ceramics at really high temperatures (like over 1200°C). Rapid temperature changes can cause the piece to expand or contract too quickly, leading to cracks. Ceramics also shrink a lot when fired, and if different parts shrink at different rates, they crack. If the glaze and the ceramic body don’t expand and contract at the same rate, that can also cause cracks.
🥣Clay: Clay pieces are dried at much lower temperatures (around 50-100°C). This gentle drying process reduces the chance of cracking because the piece doesn’t experience those extreme temperature changes. Clay mainly just loses water gradually, so it shrinks evenly and cracks less.
