This how I get the dishes done!
If you're anything like me, you've probably stood in front of your overflowing kitchen cabinets and wondered: "How many dishes do I actually need?" It’s a common dilemma! We want enough for daily life and hosting, but without the clutter, constant washing, or wasted space. I've been there, accumulating sets over time, only to realize I was using the same few plates repeatedly while others gathered dust. So, I embarked on a mission to simplify and find that 'just right' balance. My journey started by assessing my lifestyle. This is the first crucial step for anyone trying to figure out their ideal dish count. Think about: Household Size: This is the most obvious factor. A single person will need far fewer dishes than a family of four. A good rule of thumb I found is to aim for at least two of each essential item (plates, bowls, glasses, mugs) per person, plus a few extra for unexpected guests or if you don't run the dishwasher daily. Entertaining Habits: Do you host dinner parties frequently? Or is it more casual, potluck style? If you love to entertain, having an extra set of plates or a few versatile serving dishes can be a lifesaver. I realized I didn't need a full set for 12, as I rarely hosted more than 6-8 people at once. Washing Frequency: If you run your dishwasher every night, you can get away with fewer dishes. If you handwash or only run the dishwasher every couple of days, you'll need a larger buffer to avoid running out. Storage Space: This is a big one! Don't buy dishes you don't have room for. Measure your cabinet space and be realistic. Sometimes, having fewer, higher-quality, and more versatile pieces is better than a mountain of cheap, rarely-used ones. Meal Types: Do you mostly eat quick meals? Or do you enjoy multi-course dinners? This can influence the need for different types of bowls (cereal vs. large pasta bowls) or specific plates. Now, let me share my personal breakdown and what I found works for my small family: Dinner Plates: We’re a family of three, and I found having 6-8 dinner plates is perfect. This allows for a few days between washes or if we have one or two guests. Salad/Dessert Plates: I use these constantly, not just for salads! For sandwiches, snacks, or smaller portions. I have 6 of these, matching the dinner plates. Bowls: This was tricky! I ended up with 6 everyday cereal/soup bowls and 3 larger, shallow pasta bowls. The pasta bowls double as small serving bowls, which is great for versatility. Glasses: We have 6 everyday water glasses and 4 smaller juice/breakfast glasses. For mugs, I keep about 6 on hand – enough for daily coffee/tea and a couple of guests. Serving Dishes/Platters: I pared this down to 2-3 versatile platters/bowls in different sizes. They handle everything from roasted vegetables to a main course or a simple salad. My biggest takeaway is to prioritize versatility and quality over quantity. Choose items that can serve multiple purposes. And honestly, don't be afraid to declutter! If a dish is chipped, rarely used, or doesn't bring you joy, it's okay to let it go. Having the right number of dishes has made my kitchen feel so much more organized and peaceful. No more digging through stacks to find a matching plate!
