Manatee Mornings☕️
The springs were looking like a cup of hot coffee, extra steamy!☕️
Florida Springs stay a constant 72 F / 21 C year round as the fresh water comes from the underground aquifer system. When the air temperature is cold, the spring waters steam with “heat”. These warm waters are what keep the manatees warm throughout the winter months!🌊
At this time, many of the spring areas are closed off as “Manatee Sanctuaries” so that they have a quiet place to rest! But there are other areas we can visit or float outside of! 🤿

Florida’s spring waters maintain a steady temperature of about 72°F (21°C) year-round due to their source from an underground aquifer system. This remarkable phenomenon means that even on the coldest days, the springs appear to steam like a hot cup of coffee. For manatees, these warm waters are vital during the winter months, providing a comfortable refuge from chilly temperatures. Manatee sanctuaries are specially designated zones within many spring areas that restrict human access, offering peaceful environments where manatees can rest and remain undisturbed. These protected zones are essential for the conservation of these gentle marine mammals, whose populations depend on safe, warm habitats to thrive. Visitors interested in experiencing the natural beauty of Florida Springs can find alternative areas open for recreational activities such as floating, snorkeling, and wildlife observation just outside the sanctuary boundaries. Floating trips allow you to enjoy the spring’s crystal-clear waters and possibly spot manatees from a respectful distance without causing stress to the animals. For those planning a visit, it’s important to adhere to guidelines designed to protect the ecosystem and its wildlife. Refraining from entering protected manatee zones, avoiding loud noises, and using non-motorized watercraft when possible all help maintain these delicate habitats. The message also reminds visitors to join the fun responsibly, with contact details provided for local dive centers such as Birds Underwater Dive Center which offer expert advice and tours. By understanding the ecological significance of the springs and the role they play in manatee conservation, visitors can enjoy a memorable and meaningful experience while supporting efforts to protect Florida's unique aquatic life.
