What Grows in Her Garden

Reflections on Gardens and Nurturing:

This Mother's Day, as we have been landscaping around our home, I've found myself contemplating gardens—whether small or expansive—and the time needed to cultivate them. Planting these gardens requires time, a precious resource that seems to vanish more quickly as we age. Regardless of the time it takes, whether our mothers are near or far, there is always someone in our lives who has supported us in nurturing a seed or growing a garden—and it doesn’t necessarily have to be an actual garden or a mother figure.

We should value those who embody maternal qualities, as their time was invaluable in helping others grow, such as with mentors. As we look ahead, it’s essential to remember those who helped us tend to our gardens. May these memories bring a smile to your face and warmth to your heart.~ Brenna

Poem: What Grows in Her Garden

To all the mothers, grandmothers,

and guiding hearts -

your love is the root

of every bloom.

She plants with her hands,

but grows with her heart.

In her garden: laughter,

dandelions, dreams.

From one seed,

a whole garden grows.

From one girl,

a legacy of women blooms.

Some bloom as daughters,

others rise as grandmothers.

Some fly away like birds.

Others stay and hold hands.

But in every field,

in every heart—

what grows in her garden

grows in us all.

This Mother's Day, we celebrate not just one generation

but all the hands that have made us who we are.

Throughout history, gardens have been spaces where we not only cultivate plants but also relationships. Just as flowers thrive in sunlight and care, so do our dreams and aspirations flourish with guidance from those we admire. Mother's Day serves as a reminder to appreciate not just our biological mothers, but all figures who play a nurturing role. These mentors, grandmothers, and friends contribute essential wisdom and love, helping to shape us into who we are today. When we reflect on our 'gardens', we recognize the diverse paths of growth that each figure symbolizes—some teach us resilience, some impart joy, while others demonstrate the strength of critical support. Poetry, too, often captures the essence of nurturing, revealing our shared experiences. Poems about gardens remind us that growth is a journey filled with twists, turns, and new discoveries. They inspire us to celebrate not only what we harvest but also the effort and care that goes into nurturing these connections. As we honor our loved ones this Mother's Day, let’s commit to nurturing our own gardens—both physically and metaphorically—ensuring that love and kindness continue to bloom.
