Even if you don't surf, the sunsets are absolutely magical, and the fresh seafood is to die for. And let's talk about food – you cannot go to El Salvador without trying pupusas! These thick, handmade corn tortillas filled with cheese, beans, or chicharrón (or a mix!) are a national treasure. I had them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and honestly, I regret nothing. Served with curtido (a lightly fermented cabbage slaw) and salsa roja, they are pure comfort food. El Salvador is also famous for its rich coffee culture. I took a tour along the Ruta de las Flores, which is this picturesque route through charming colonial towns and coffee plantations. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans was intoxicating, and learning about the process from bean to cup was fascinating. Plus, the views from these highlands are incredible. Don't forget to visit places like Concepción de Ataco or Apaneca for their colorful murals and artisan markets. One thing I really appreciated was learning about the country's resilience and progress. While past narratives often focused on challenges, the people are incredibly warm and proud of their heritage. Sites like Joya de Cerén, often called the 'Pompeii of the Americas,' offer a unique glimpse into ancient Mayan village life, preserved under volcanic ash. Honestly, El Salvador is a hidden gem that deserves more attention. It offers adventure, incredible food, rich culture, and genuinely friendly people.
