Spending a day indulging in halal food across Sydney was one of the most flavorful experiences I’ve had recently. Starting with Watan Afghan Cuisine in Granville, I was introduced to mantu—soft dumplings filled with spiced beef mince and onions—served with a creamy yogurt and tomato sauce that gave it a comforting twist. The mixed platter featuring kebabs cooked over charcoal stood out, particularly the smoky, well-seasoned lamb and the palaw rice, which combined carrots and raisins to provide a delightful burst of sweetness. Moving on to Guildford, I discovered Emm Ali, a Lebanese dessert shop that truly impressed me. The qatayef, stuffed pancakes with cheese, paired with honey offered a perfect balance of sweet and savory. I enjoyed the Lebanese coffee, which, though strong, was invigorating. The ousmalieh—a crispy kataifi dessert combined with ashta ice cream, pistachios, rose, and honey—was fragrant and delicately sweet, making it a standout treat. At Al Beik Shawarma in Granville, the mixed shawarma featuring chicken and lamb was grilled over flames, giving the wrap a slightly crispy texture that was both satisfying and fresh thanks to the garlic sauce, pickles, onions, and tomatoes. Street Flavours Cafe in Auburn introduced me to a spicy Nepali snack called fulki, somewhat similar to pani puri but served hot with a rich filling—the chilli heat was intense but pleasant. To round off the day, I tried chicken sausages that were not only crispy-skinned but oozed with cheese—salty and addictive, they made a perfect savory snack. Overall, this halal food journey around Sydney offered incredible diversity and authenticity, introducing me to new flavors and traditional dishes that are a must-try for anyone exploring the halal food scene in the city.
