So many of you have asked about how I get that crisp, clean ink look in my digital drawings, especially since it feels like traditional ink can be so intimidating! I totally get it. When I first started experimenting with digital art on my iPad, I was a bit overwhelmed, thinking I needed fancy tools or years of practice to achieve anything close to a beautiful ink drawing. But let me tell you, with Procreate, creating easy ink drawings is not only possible but incredibly fun! My journey into digital ink began with a simple desire to make my daily drawings pop more. I love the definite lines and strong contrasts that ink offers, but the thought of spilled ink or ruined paper always held me back from traditional methods. That’s where my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil became my magic wand. Procreate offers an incredible array of brushes that perfectly mimic traditional inking tools, from fine liners to chunky markers, and even brushes that simulate the texture of a bristly pen. For anyone just starting out, here’s my go-to method for easy ink drawings in Procreate. First, don't overthink your sketch. I usually start with a light sketch using a basic pencil brush on one layer. This is just to get the general shape and composition right. For pet portraits, which I adore doing, I focus on capturing their unique expressions and features in this initial stage. Next, and this is where the magic happens, I create a new layer above my sketch layer. This is crucial for non-destructive editing! On this new layer, I select an inking brush. Procreate’s default 'Studio Pen' or 'Technical Pen' are fantastic starting points for clean lines. Some of my personal favorites for a more organic feel include the 'Dry Ink' or 'Syrup' brushes, which give a lovely textured line that feels very authentic to traditional ink. I then trace over my sketch, focusing on confident, smooth strokes. Don't be afraid to use Procreate's 'QuickShape' feature by holding your pen down at the end of a stroke to smooth out wobbly lines or create perfect circles and straight lines. One trick I learned for achieving that classic ink drawing vibe is varying your line weight. Pressing harder with your Apple Pencil will create thicker lines, while a lighter touch gives you delicate ones. This variation adds depth and interest to your drawing. For shadowing, instead of blending, I often use hatching or cross-hatching techniques, just like you would with a real ink pen. Simply draw parallel lines in one direction, then cross them with another set of parallel lines to build up darker areas. It’s a simple yet effective way to add dimension without needing to master complex shading. After I’m happy with my ink lines, I simply turn off the visibility of my sketch layer, and voilà – a clean, easy ink drawing! It’s such a rewarding process, and the beauty of digital is that if you make a mistake, an undo button is always there to save the day. I find this especially helpful when I'm trying to draw specific pets, as getting those tiny details just right can be challenging. So, if you've been curious about ink drawings but found traditional methods daunting, give digital inking a try on your iPad. It’s a game-changer for daily drawing practice and unlocking your inner artist!
