🏡 We turned an Airbnb into a home with one grocery trip

Today we skipped cafés and sightseeing and did something simple — grocery shopping in Johor Bahru.

We spent about SGD100 on fresh vegetables, seafood, chicken, and pantry staples for a few days of home-cooked meals.

Back at our Airbnb, we unpacked everything, set up the kitchen, and cooked dinner together.

Nothing fancy — just simple food, shared moments, and the comfort of creating routine wherever we stay.

This is what slow travel looks like for us. 🛒🍳✨

From my personal travels, I’ve found that visiting local grocery stores like NSK Trade City in Johor Bahru offers an authentic glimpse into everyday life and flavors of the region. Spending about SGD100 on fresh vegetables, seafood, chicken, and pantry staples not only supports local businesses but also saves money compared to eating out every meal. Unpacking and setting up the kitchen in the Airbnb turns a temporary space into a cozy living environment. Simple rituals like cooking dinner together with fresh ingredients make it feel personal and comforting. It’s not just about the food but sharing those moments, telling stories, and enjoying the process of creating meals tailored to your tastes. I also love exploring regional products and spices, like the local 'Perencah Kari Ikan' seasoning or fresh seafood found in Johor Bahru markets. These unique flavors bring local culture into the comfort of your temporary home, enriching the culinary experience. Over time, consistent routines such as grocery shopping and home cooking can transform how you perceive travel—from a series of fleeting visits into meaningful, lived-in experiences. For fellow travelers considering a slow travel approach, I recommend prioritizing grocery trips to local markets and embracing simple cooking. This practice not only nurtures your body and soul but also deepens your connection to the destination. It’s an affordable, flexible way to bring a sense of stability while still enjoying the adventure of a new place.
