SGD3600 for 2 💰30 DAYS IN JB 🇲🇾

We spent a month living in JB as part of our slow-travel retirement. 🇲🇾

We have a SGD 4,000 monthly budget, but we’re not trying to spend as little as possible. We want to enjoy the freedom retirement gives us.

I used to cook a lot in retirement to keep our spending down. But JB has so many food choices that I found myself hunting for restaurants instead of hunting for recipes. 😂🍜

There was also Grab when public transport wasn’t convenient, a massage, a premium movie, and even a little overnight trip to Kluang.

Our approximate spending for 30 days came to SGD 3,600 for two.

For us, slow travel is about having the time to live somewhere, explore, eat well, rest and enjoy the little things.

Our version of intentional living. 🌏

Would you be comfortable with a SGD 4,000 monthly travel budget

... Read moreSpending a month in Johor Bahru offers a unique perspective on what it means to truly experience a city beyond just sightseeing. From personal experience, living in JB allows retirees and travelers alike to immerse themselves in the local culture, cuisine, and daily rhythms at a relaxed pace. One major highlight of slow travel in JB is the incredible variety of food choices. Unlike the usual retirement plan of cooking at home to save money, I found myself happily exploring the many restaurants serving delicious Cantonese dim sum and local Malaysian delights. Dining out not only satisfies the palate but also provides a social and cultural connection that's hard to replicate when cooking alone. Transportation is another important aspect when living in JB. While public transport can be limited in some areas, services like Grab make it easy to get around conveniently. The flexibility and comfort of ridesharing proved invaluable for spontaneous trips, like an overnight getaway to nearby Kluang, enhancing the travel experience without much hassle. Budgeting about SGD 3,600 for two people over 30 days, including accommodation, food, transport, and occasional entertainment like massages or premium cinema visits, demonstrates that comfortable, fulfilling retirement travel doesn't require an extravagant budget. Airbnb homes around SGD 1,500 provide a cozy base, while the remainder covers lifestyle choices that prioritize quality and enjoyment. Intentional living and slow travel encourage focusing on experiences that matter—whether it’s savoring a favorite dish, resting well, or exploring local neighborhoods at one’s own pace. This approach to travel fosters personal growth and a deeper appreciation of place, making each stay memorable and meaningful. If you’re considering adopting a similar retirement travel style or simply a longer stay in Johor Bahru, planning your monthly budget with these factors in mind can help you enjoy freedom, comfort, and enriching experiences without stress. Embrace the charm of JB and see how slow travel can redefine your idea of living well abroad.
