Law Office vs. Education: Follow the Vibe

…Not Just the Money 🏛️

2/20 Edited to

... Read moreChoosing between working in a law office and pursuing a career in education is often more complex than just comparing salaries. From my personal experience, vibe and environment play a crucial role in job satisfaction. While the law office can feel more structured and formal, education settings often foster more human connection and a feeling of making a direct impact. In school settings, I had opportunities to work with diverse groups, including those with special needs, and that experience highlighted how much the educational environment nurtures a different kind of fulfillment. Sitting at the front desk in a law office provided a clear structure and expectations, but it didn’t resonate with my deeper values as much as education did. One important takeaway is that it’s okay not to have all the answers about your career path immediately. Career trajectories can be nonlinear, offering multiple ways to take advantage of opportunities. Some people may find their niche by trying out different roles and environments until they discover what truly aligns with them. Resonating with the vibe of your workplace is just as critical as financial remuneration. It affects motivation, mental well-being, and ultimately your professional growth. Trusting yourself through transitions and not rushing to figure everything out at once can open up many doors. It’s a process of exploration, learning, and adapting. Whether in a law office or education, seeking roles that align with your values and provide a supportive environment can make all the difference. Focus on what feels right for you, and allow room for growth and change along the way.

This week’s client secondment threw me into office politics chaos and it made me realize how corrupted big law can be. In a law firm, success boils down to billable hours: log the time, get your annual raise and promotion. Sure, partners play favorites, but the rules of the game are pretty clear.
