Use AI as a Study Partner — Not a Shortcut
When I started using AI as a study partner, I initially worried it might become a shortcut that would hinder my learning. However, I found that treating AI as a thinking buddy rather than a shortcut transformed my study habits completely. For example, I began by uploading the learning outcomes of my courses into a generative AI tool and asking it to help formulate questions that tested my understanding of the material. This approach encouraged active engagement rather than passive consumption. Additionally, I asked the AI to help me create visual aids like diagrams and flow charts that clarified complex processes, policies, and systems covered in my classes. Using these visuals not only reinforced my memory but also helped me see contrasts and structures more clearly. The key was to guide the AI with specific information—such as the required readings and upcoming topics—to receive relevant and helpful outputs. Importantly, I set boundaries to ensure I used AI ethically. Instead of asking it to do my assignments, I focused on using it to clarify concepts and explore ideas that I could then elaborate on myself. This method prevented overdependence and made the AI a valuable extension of my critical thinking process. A practical tip is to regularly generate quizzes from the AI to self-assess comprehension. This feedback loop made me more confident during exams because I knew I had grasped the subject thoroughly. Overall, integrating AI thoughtfully has enhanced my learning experience by encouraging curiosity, critical inquiry, and creative visualization without cutting corners.
