Creating a Five Nights at Freddy's (FNAF) Alternate Universe, or AU, is one of the most exciting ways to dive deeper into the lore and characters we all love. It's a chance to explore 'what if' scenarios, redesign animatronics, and even craft entirely new backstories. For me, one of the most compelling aspects of character design in an AU is how their eyes are portrayed. After all, the eyes are often called the windows to the soul, and for animatronics, they can convey so much about their programming, their past, or even the spirits that possess them. I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about how different eye designs can completely change a character’s vibe. For instance, imagine a version of Freddy in an AU where his eyes aren't just the typical blue but glow with an eerie, shifting purple hue when he's active. Or what if Chica's eyes were perpetually wide and glassy, giving her a look of perpetual surprise or even silent horror? These small changes can add layers of personality and fear that the original designs hint at but don't always explicitly show. Speaking of unique eye traits, it got me thinking about conditions like heterochromia. While typically associated with humans, imagine if an animatronic in your FNAF AU had eyes of two completely different colors! It could symbolize a split personality, two souls inhabiting one body, or even a factory defect that turned into a distinguishing, terrifying feature. Perhaps one eye is the original animatronic's, cold and mechanical, while the other glows with the distinct color of a possessed child’s spirit. It’s a creative choice that can really make a character stand out and provoke questions about their origin. I've even played around with ideas for Roxy in my own AU. What if her eyes, usually a vibrant pink, turned a dull, almost dead gray when she was in a state of distress or malfunction? Or perhaps one of her eyes is permanently cracked, showing the wires beneath, a constant reminder of a past battle or injury. It makes you think about her internal state, just like that message, 'Hey Roxy how are u?' It adds a different layer to her character than the typical confident rockstar. Beyond just color, the shape and condition of the eyes can be crucial. Are they perfectly round, or are they elongated and predatory? Are they completely black with tiny pinpricks of light, or do they have visible, intricate mechanisms behind them? Scratches, cracks, or missing lenses can tell a story of wear and tear, neglect, or violent encounters. In an AU, these details could signify a character's age, the severity of their haunting, or even a hidden ability. For example, glowing eyes might indicate active possession or a power surge, while dim, flickering eyes could suggest a weakening spirit or a failing power source. Ultimately, when designing eyes for your FNAF AU characters, the goal is to enhance their narrative and visual appeal. Whether you opt for a subtle change or a drastic reimagining, the eyes serve as a focal point that can draw readers in and leave a lasting impression.
