There were two cardinals in the bird feeder
Good Morning 😊 Happy Friday! I hope you have a beautiful day and a wonderful weekend.
If you watch closely, you'll notice this guy brought a friend ❤️
Waking up to the sight of two vibrant cardinals at my bird feeder this morning was just the sweetest start to my Friday! It always sparks so much joy to see these beautiful birds, and it got me thinking about how much they truly love visiting our backyard buffets. If you're hoping to attract more of these crimson beauties, or simply want to create a more bustling bird haven, I've picked up a few tips along the way that I'd love to share! First off, do cardinals like bird feeders? From my experience, and what I've learned from fellow bird enthusiasts, it's a resounding YES! Northern Cardinals are often quite bold and don't shy away from feeders, especially if they feel safe. They prefer feeders with a stable perch, as they're larger birds than say, a finch. This is why platform feeders or larger hopper feeders are often their top choice. Speaking of hopper feeders, they're fantastic because they keep seeds dry and dispense them slowly, which is perfect for these frequent visitors. You might even find birds like chickadees or titmice, and sometimes even the occasional woodpecker, enjoying a wooden hopper feeder alongside the cardinals! Now, for the million-dollar question: what are cardinals' favorite foods? If you want to roll out the red carpet for them, black oil sunflower seeds are absolutely essential. These small, high-fat seeds are a powerhouse of energy and are irresistible to cardinals. I always make sure my feeders are stocked with them! Beyond that, they also have a soft spot for safflower seeds. Many birders swear by safflower because it's often ignored by squirrels and pest birds like grackles, making it a great option if you're trying to selectively feed. Cracked corn and peanuts (shelled and crushed) are also popular choices. Don't forget about fruit too! In the winter, I sometimes offer apple slices or grapes, which can be a real treat. But it's not just about the food! To truly create a bird-friendly space, consider providing fresh water, especially in colder months or during hot summers. A bird bath can be as attractive as a feeder. Also, remember that consistency is key. Birds learn where reliable food sources are, so try to keep your feeders consistently filled. Keeping your feeders clean is super important too, to prevent the spread of diseases. Just a quick scrub every couple of weeks can make a big difference. While my cardinals were the stars today, having a variety of feeders and foods can attract an amazing array of other birds. I've seen everything from energetic chickadees and nuthatches to the striking Downy Woodpecker on my feeders. Each species has its own preferences, and observing them is part of the fun! So, whether you're just starting your birdwatching journey or you're a seasoned pro, creating a welcoming space for birds like our beloved cardinals is a rewarding experience. Happy birdwatching, everyone!
