Betrayed by a closed door
My betrayal list is complicated. I thought I'd share a simple one. To our cats, every closed door is a betrayal. It actually doesn't matter what kind of door. It could be an actual door, a cabinet, or a closet. Cats have limited object permanence. The concept of multiple doors leading to one place isn't one they easily comprehend. To them, every door leads to a different place. Admittedly, the whole object permanence thing is just beyond me. Our cats are intelligent. They remember where we keep the cat food and treats. They remember what time my daughter comes home from work. Just before she's supposed to come home, they wait for her by the front door, facing the front door. If she runs too late, they become anxious and start screaming at the door. They know which bedroom belongs to which members of our family. The fact that they always check the back door when it's raining or snowing at the front door is something I'll never understand.
