Singer 127 Restoration
I know this topic is a bit more niche. Especially compared to what I’ve seen on this app so far. But this is a project I am SUPER proud of and something I’m passionate about. This was one of (yes ONE of) my grandmothers singer 127 models. It was in the best condition so I decided to restore it. It was originally the sphinx pattern (which I hate to be completely honest with you). The water slide decals to do the restoration range anywhere from $50-$100 depending on the style. I decided that if I was going to drop that kind of cash, I was going to make my dream sewing machine. It was $75 for these decals in particular. The cabinet was missing its middle drawer. I have an identical 127, same pattern and same cabinet. It also had no middle drawer. So I found an empty, fairly rotten (empty) cabinet of an unknown brand in the barn. I had no hopes that this drawer from a totally different brand’s cabinet would work, but it did. So I sanded it and stained it to be closer in color. I found the missing drawer pull (you can see in the second photo) on eBay for $10. I painted the cast iron parts with a heavy duty black spray enamel (pricey!). I oiled up the machine and treadle wheels and bought a new belt. The HARDEST PART of the entire restoration was removing the hand wheel up top on the sewing machine, which was completely and totally stuck. Finally got it off so that the stop motion screw could be moved to lock and unlock the needle (this is necessary to thread a bobbin with the bobbin winder). I also replaced the bobbin winder which I cleaned and repolished. It still isn’t perfect by any means, but I can sew with it now.
