✨Cleaning silver (silver plated)✨
So, obviously you can go the usual way and take a silver cleaner polish that has to be buffed. I actually DO use that stuff, but I do it last and only need minimal buffing the way I clean. I start by using a silver JEWELRY cleaner on a damp cloth (that I don’t care about). This cleans nearly instantly;however, I do NOT recommend using this method every time you clean the same piece. For regular maintenance I use silver polish or (believe it or not) toothpaste. This is for that initial clean for thrift pieces or pieces that have been sitting a very long time and tarnished pretty heavily. It’s mostly just a time saver. After I’ve used the jewelry cleaner on the damp cloth I take my “cleaning” toothbrush and use the same cleaner. This gets into all of those fine, tiny details. After that I give the piece a quick wash with a little dawn and rinse well. Next I take the silver polish and a different rag or toothbrush and gently buff it over the entire piece. Rinse again and wash with dawn, then dry and buff with a soft towel. The jewelry cleaner leaves the silver looking kind of gold-ish, the silver polish buffs and shines it to a true silver. My whole process takes maybe 2-3 minutes instead of 7-10 with just buffing.
Important to note:
1. the jewelry cleaner I use and have pictured here is VERY STRONG so I actually have to clean a small section then rinse, repeat until the whole piece has been cleaned. It can eat through the coating really quickly if you don’t watch what you’re doing, but if done correctly can be used multiple times with no problems.
2. I do NOT use this very strong cleaner on the inside of any of my silver pieces that do not have a glass insert as a barrier. Yes I clean after using this with dawn, but this is a harsh chemical so I don’t use on any parts that would directly touch food. For those parts usually light buffing is all I need. Alternatively I can use toothpaste if there ARE stubborn tarnish spots and toothpaste is more “food safe”

You'll need a bowl lined with aluminum foil, hot water, baking soda, and a pinch of salt. Place your silver item (like that tarnished silver-plated dish lid we saw earlier!) directly on the foil. Sprinkle a few tablespoons of baking soda and a teaspoon of salt over it, then pour hot water until the item is submerged. The chemical reaction between the aluminum, baking soda, and hot water actually reverses the tarnishing process. Let it sit for a few minutes (you might even see the tarnish lift!), then remove, rinse well, and buff with a soft cloth. It’s a gentler option for delicate pieces and often recommended for how to clean silver plated items. For more stubborn spots or for pieces you prefer not to submerge, a paste made from white vinegar and baking soda can work wonders. Mix about 1/4 cup of baking soda with two tablespoons of white vinegar to form a thick paste. Gently apply this paste to the tarnished areas with a soft cloth or an old toothbrush. Let it sit for a few minutes, then gently rub. The mild abrasive quality of the baking soda combined with the acidity of the vinegar helps to lift the tarnish. Always rinse thoroughly with water afterwards and dry completely to prevent water spots. This method is great for intricate details where you need a bit more control, and for those searching for before after silver cleaning baking soda results. You might remember I mentioned toothpaste in my initial speedy cleaning routine. It's truly a secret weapon for light tarnish and for those times when you can't use stronger chemicals, especially on areas that might touch food – perfect for cleaning the inside of a silver-plated dish! Make sure to use a plain white toothpaste (not gel, not whitening with microbeads, as those can be too abrasive). Apply a small dab to a soft cloth or a cotton swab, gently rub the tarnished area, and watch the grime come off. Rinse thoroughly and buff dry. It's surprisingly effective for a quick touch-up and great for cleaning silver jewelry with white toothpaste! A quick note on silver-plated items: they are beautiful, as we saw in the 'before and after' images of the silver-plated dish, but they need a little extra care compared to solid silver. The silver layer is very thin, so harsh rubbing or overly abrasive cleaners can wear it down over time. Always opt for the gentlest method first. The baking soda and foil method is often recommended for plating as it's non-abrasive. When using commercial polishes like 'Wright's Silver Cream' or even a 'CONNOISSEURS Silver JEWELRY CLEANER' (as I did), be extra mindful of the instructions and the amount of pressure you apply. My multi-step method works by tackling heavy tarnish quickly with the strong cleaner, then refining with polish, but it's crucial to understand where and when to apply such strength, especially on plating. Finally, to keep your silver gleaming longer and reduce the need for intensive cleaning, consider prevention! Store your silver in anti-tarnish bags or cloths, or even wrap it in acid-free tissue paper. Humidity is tarnishing's best friend, so keep your pieces in a dry environment. A little proactive care means you'll spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying that beautiful, polished sparkle!
