So I found the pixel art on Pinterest and fell in love with it. Apothecary diaries is my and my husband’s guilty pleasure anime. I figured that I could easily cross stitch the artwork if I thought of the pixel squares as X’s. Credit to docariadraw for the art (follow them if you like this one they have a TON more). I color matched as best I could with the DMC floss my mom already had. It has stretched out a little so looks a bit wonky, but I haven’t stitched in nearly 6 years so I’m happy. It’s going to be a bookmark when I’m done.

... Read moreHey everyone! Seeing my little Apothecary Diaries cross-stitch come to life has me bubbling with crafting joy, and it got me thinking about all the cool ways we can bring our favorite anime to life with a needle and thread. If you're like me and just starting (or restarting!) your cross-stitch journey, especially with pixel art, there's a whole world of fun to explore! First off, let's talk about why shows like The Apothecary Diaries pixel art are just perfect for this craft. The character designs are so distinct and beautiful, and they translate wonderfully into pixel art patterns. It's such a treat to watch Maomao or Jinshi emerge stitch by stitch! Beyond “Apothecary Diaries,” I've seen incredible pixel art patterns for other popular anime too – think Studio Ghibli characters, scenes from “Spirited Away,” or even iconic moments from “Sailor Moon” or “My Hero Academia.” The key is finding artists who create these brilliant pixel art versions, often sharing them on platforms like Pinterest or dedicated fan art sites, much like how I found the amazing work by docariadraw. Always remember to credit the original artist if you share your finished piece! It's a fantastic way to celebrate their talent and the anime we love. Now, for anyone looking to dive into pixel art cross-stitch, having the right equipment makes all the difference. You don't need a huge setup, but a few basics will elevate your experience. Of course, you’ll need your pattern – whether it’s a printed chart with DMC color codes or a digital one you follow on a tablet. For fabric, Aida fabric is a cross-stitch staple; its even weave makes those perfect little 'X's so much easier. I usually go for 14-count Aida, but higher counts (like 18 or 20) give a finer, more detailed look, while lower counts (like 11 or 12) make larger, bolder stitches. Don't forget your needles – blunt-tipped tapestry needles are best for cross-stitch as they slide through the fabric weave without splitting threads. A good embroidery hoop or Q-snap frame keeps your fabric taut, which is crucial for even stitches. And, of course, the vibrant DMC floss! There are so many gorgeous colors, and matching them to your pixel art design is part of the fun. Small sharp scissors for snipping threads are also a must. While it might seem like a lot for a hobby, investing in good tools really makes the process more enjoyable and your finished pieces look more professional, even if they're just for personal use or gifting. And speaking of finished pieces, turning your pixel art into a bookmark stitch is such a genius idea! It’s a practical way to enjoy your art daily. For bookmarks, I recommend choosing a design that isn't too wide. Once your stitching is done, the finishing touches are important. You'll want to stabilize and protect it. One common method is to cut the Aida fabric a bit larger than your stitched area, then fold and hem the edges, or even back it with felt or a coordinating fabric. This adds durability and prevents fraying. You can use a bit of fabric glue or stitch the backing on. Another option is to use a product like Fray Check on the edges before folding. For extra flair, adding a tassel to the top or bottom can really make it pop. My current Apothecary Diaries bookmark is still a W.I.P., but I’m already dreaming about how good it’ll look peeking out of my next book! It’s a rewarding project, especially for those smaller pixel art designs that you want to show off. Happy stitching, fellow crafters! What anime characters are you dreaming of cross-stitching next?

if you’re bad at being consistent, read this ➡️
my whole life i defined consistency as perfection. if i slipped up, missed a day, made a mistake, then in my head i “broke my streak” and had to start all over again (which is super discouraging) but consistency isn’t doing everything exactly right every day. it’s about showing up to the table -
