... Read moreWe've all been there: in the heat of a disagreement, that strong urge to be right takes over. For a long time, I found myself prioritizing proving my point over preserving the feelings of others. It felt like a battle, and my main objective was to logically dismantle the other person's argument, even if it meant stepping on their emotions a little. But what does it truly mean when you prioritize proving your point over preserving feelings? It often means that our ego is leading the conversation. We become so focused on our own perspective, our need for validation, or even a fear of being wrong, that we lose sight of the bigger picture: the relationship itself. I realized this was my pattern – I'd walk away from a discussion feeling like I'd 'won,' but often, the atmosphere was tense, and the other person felt unheard or even hurt. That's not a real win. This approach can have serious consequences. When you consistently disregard another person's feelings in favor of your own intellectual victory, you erode trust. They might start to feel like their emotions don't matter to you, or that you value being right more than you value them. Communication can shut down, as they might hesitate to share their thoughts or feelings in the future, anticipating that they'll just be challenged or dismissed. It creates a dynamic where true understanding and connection become incredibly difficult. I used to think that eventually, 'tables will turn' – that if I was right, the truth would eventually reveal itself, and I'd be vindicated. While truth is important, focusing solely on that vindication can prevent us from seeking a more constructive path. It’s not about who is objectively 'right' or 'wrong' in every instance, but about how we navigate differences while maintaining respect and connection. Is the goal to win an argument, or to understand each other better and strengthen our bond? So, how can we shift this mindset? It starts with conscious effort and a willingness to be vulnerable. Instead of immediately formulating a counter-argument, try active listening. Really hear what the other person is saying, both verbally and non-verbally. Validate their feelings, even if you don't agree with their conclusion. Phrases like, "I can see why you feel that way," or "That sounds really frustrating," can open up a pathway for understanding. Another crucial step is to ask yourself, "What's truly important here?" Is it winning this specific point, or is it maintaining a healthy, respectful relationship? Often, the latter far outweighs the former. Sometimes, the best outcome isn't one person winning and the other losing, but finding a middle ground, or simply agreeing to disagree respectfully. It's about finding solutions that work for everyone, or at least acknowledging each other's perspectives without judgment. Learning to balance the desire to express your opinion with the need to preserve feelings is a journey. It's about choosing empathy over ego, and understanding that true strength often lies not in proving your point, but in fostering connection. I'm still working on it, but recognizing this pattern has made a huge difference in how I approach disagreements and, ultimately, in the quality of my relationships.
