From my own experience, recognizing the toll that seasonal changes take on mental health is the first step toward recovery. Anxiety and stress can exacerbate feelings of sadness and can also impact physical health, often leading to fluctuations in weight and general well-being. What helped me significantly was developing small but consistent habits focused on increasing happiness and maintaining a healthy weight. For example, incorporating light physical activity outdoors, even on challenging days, can boost endorphins and improve mood. I started with short walks during daylight hours to combat the lethargy brought on by shorter days. Adjusting my diet to include more nutrient-dense foods and limiting processed items helped me feel more energetic and stable. Mindfulness practices such as journaling my feelings or practicing gratitude turned out to be essential tools. They shifted my focus toward recognizing moments of happiness rather than dwelling on stress triggers. Seeking social support, whether through friends, family, or support groups, provided me with encouragement when facing low periods. Ultimately, managing seasonal depression and anxiety is a personal journey that involves both mental and physical health strategies. Sharing these experiences and strategies creates a supportive environment where others struggling can find inspiration and practical advice to foster their own happiness and maintain a healthy weight.
