When Silence Speaks Louder Than Words
Let me say this as a therapist and as a human being
silent treatment is not emotional regulation.
It’s emotional avoidance dressed up as “I need space.”
From a clinical lens, prolonged silence activates anxiety, abandonment wounds, and nervous system dysregulation.
From a personal lens? It’s exhausting because now I’m doing the emotional labor for two while you disappear.
Now let me add this, because nuance matters:
yes, I choose silence sometimes too.
Especially with certain people when I can sense the conversation will lead to what I don’t want disrespect, chaos, or emotional depletion.
I don’t believe in having conflict with everyone.
Everyone deserves respect but not everyone gets access to my emotional energy.
That doesn’t make me avoidant. That makes me discerning.
As a therapist, I know the difference between withdrawing to protect my peace and withholding communication to punish someone. One is a boundary. The other is a weapon.
And I’m no longer confusing the two.
Healthy adults can pause and return to communicate when the relationship matters. But not every relationship earns that level of engagement and that’s okay.
Conflict is not owed just because someone wants access.
Thursday Blooms.
I’m choosing self-respect over spiraling, clarity over confusion, and peace over performing emotional labor where it isn’t safe or reciprocal.
If you choose silence to control, I choose myself.
If I choose silence to protect, that’s called growth.
