Overdue & Over It: Let’s Talk About “Visibility”
Honestly, this conversation is late.
Because as therapists, and especially as Black therapists, we’ve been sold this idea that certain platforms are mandatory if we want to be taken seriously. As if credibility only counts when it’s algorithm-approved. Please.
Let me say this plainly: exposure without return is not an opportunity. It’s an expense.
If a platform gives you “visibility” but no referrals, no alignment, no real connection, and no respect for the labor you’re offering, that’s not growth. That’s unpaid emotional work with Wi-Fi.
I’m no longer pouring money and energy into spaces that don’t support my actual work. Not my values-for-show. Not my “brand aesthetic.” My real work. My clients. My community. My sustainability. If a space requires me to constantly perform, explain myself, or shrink my voice just to stay visible, it’s getting cut. No dramatic exit. No announcement.
Just boundaries.
And let’s be honest, word of mouth has been doing the heavy lifting anyway.
Community referrals. Trusted relationships. People who have actually sat with my work and felt its impact. That’s where the growth has come from. Not chasing reach. Not paying to be seen by people who were never going to book, collaborate, or refer in the first place.
I’m choosing alignment over exposure.
Depth over noise.
Sustainability over “you should be on here.”
If it doesn’t feed the work, protect the work, or respect the work, it’s not necessary.
And I’m done letting anyone tell me otherwise.

Aligning your presence with your values and prioritizing quality referrals has reshaped my business and wellbeing. Ultimately, this journey is about valuing your genuine contributions over mere impressions or temporary trends.
