When Pulling Away Isn’t About You

Not everyone who pulls away

is trying to hurt you.

But that doesn’t mean

it doesn’t hurt.

Because when someone creates distance,

it’s easy to fill in the blanks with your own fears.

“They don’t care.”

“I did something wrong.”

“I’m being pushed away.”

And sometimes… yes, that is the truth.

But other times,

people step back because they’re overwhelmed.

Because they don’t have the language.

Because they don’t have the capacity.

Because they’re trying to keep themselves together

without unraveling in front of someone else.

And that kind of distance?

It’s not always rejection.

It’s regulation.

But here’s the part we don’t talk about enough:

You can have compassion for someone’s capacity

and still acknowledge your own needs.

Understanding why someone pulls away

doesn’t mean you have to shrink your expectations

or silence your feelings.

Both can be true.

They might be overwhelmed.

And you might still need clarity, consistency, and care.

So instead of immediately blaming yourself…

pause.

Get curious.

Stay grounded.

And remember

Not everything is about you,

but your needs still matter.

... Read moreIn my personal experience, recognizing that when someone pulls away, it’s often more about their internal struggles than a reflection on me has been freeing. People may create distance because they feel overwhelmed and lack the tools to express their emotions, not because they don’t care. It’s important to remind yourself that pulling away can be a form of self-regulation rather than rejection. I’ve found that practicing curiosity instead of immediately assuming the worst helps avoid unnecessary hurt. Asking gentle questions and seeking clarity can open a path to better understanding both their boundaries and your own needs. Balancing compassion for someone else’s capacity with advocacy for your emotional needs is key. You can hold both truths simultaneously: that they may be overwhelmed and that you deserve care, consistency, and clear communication. In situations where a loved one steps back, giving them space while maintaining your own boundaries preserves your well-being. It’s not about shrinking expectations or silencing feelings but about honoring the emotional complexity on both sides. This mindful approach creates room for connection without compromise on what you truly need. Remember, distance doesn’t always mean disinterest. Sometimes, it’s an effort to avoid unraveling in front of someone, a way to stay intact. Recognizing this can transform feelings of rejection into compassion and empower you to navigate relationships with greater emotional intelligence and self-respect.
