My Tumbler Is My Emotional Support Coworker
As a therapist, I spend all day telling people to breathe, pause, regulate, hydrate, rest, and listen to their body.
Then I look up and realize I have had two sips of water, a protein shake, and the audacity to wonder why I am tired.
Therapist life is really me pouring into everybody else and then remembering, “Girl, you are also a person.”
So this tumbler is not decoration. This is accountability with a straw.
Water matters. Energy, focus, mood, digestion, skin, clearer thinking—all of it. And honestly, if I am going to hold space, document, problem-solve, and act like I know what day it is, I need to stay hydrated.
Self-care does not always have to be deep. Sometimes it is literally drinking the water before your body starts sending customer service complaints.
You cannot pour from an empty cup, but you also cannot function off vibes and one sip from 9 AM.
What’s helping you stay hydrated this week?

As someone who works in a high-stress, emotionally demanding role, I completely resonate with the feeling of being drained by the end of the day. Staying hydrated often gets overlooked, yet it’s one of the simplest ways to maintain energy and mental sharpness. I found that keeping a dedicated tumbler nearby creates a gentle but effective accountability system—seeing the water in front of me reminds me to sip regularly without even having to think about it. What’s fascinating is how water impacts so many aspects of wellness—energy levels improve, digestion feels better, my skin looks healthier, and I can think more clearly. This isn’t just anecdotal; science supports the importance of hydration for cognitive function and mood regulation. For those of us pouring into others’ lives, it’s vital to remember we need to take care of our own bodies to show up fully and authentically. Adding a protein shake or nutritious snack alongside water can sustain energy longer and stabilize mood swings caused by low blood sugar or dehydration. I also love incorporating reminders throughout the day—whether a phone alarm or just visual cues like a brightly colored tumbler—to break the cycle of forgetting to drink. Keeping water interesting by infusing it with lemon, cucumber, or fresh herbs can also encourage more frequent sips. Ultimately, self-care doesn’t have to be complicated; it can be as simple as honoring the basic needs of your body with regular hydration. For therapists and professionals facing emotionally taxing days, this small habit can significantly enhance resilience. What strategies help you stay hydrated and energized during busy workdays? Sharing tips can inspire others to prioritize their wellness too.
