The Sons We Raise and the Men We Fear

Reflecting on my own experiences growing up, I realized how much the lessons about emotion I received shaped who I am today. Like many boys, I was taught to 'man up' and avoid showing vulnerability because it was seen as a weakness. This cultural expectation often resulted in hiding feelings rather than processing them. The passage describing how adults tell young boys they want better for them but expose them to violence and survival challenges deeply resonates with me. In many communities, the message around expressing emotion to boys is mixed—words encouraging care are contradicted by behaviors enforcing toughness through adversity. For instance, in family or social environments where survival tactics such as secrecy or guarding one's feelings are necessary, emotional suppression becomes a learned response to avoid ridicule or harm. I’ve found that breaking this cycle requires creating safe spaces where boys can express themselves without fear. This could be through therapy, open conversations, or role models who demonstrate emotional intelligence. It’s essential for parents, educators, and community leaders to question what behaviors and lessons we are truly teaching boys about emotion. Are we offering them hope through understanding and support, or inadvertently preparing them for a life of emotional isolation? Recognizing these dynamics is the first step toward nurturing emotionally healthy men who are capable of trust, vulnerability, and connection—qualities that benefit individuals and society as a whole.
