... Read moreBeyond just November, gardening in Zone 12 truly feels like an endless summer! If you're new to this tropical paradise, understanding a few key things about our unique climate can make all the difference. I've been gardening in a Zone 12b microzone near San Juan, and I've learned that consistent warmth isn't just a luxury, it's a guide for our plant choices. One of the biggest advantages is our frost-free environment, meaning many plants that are annuals elsewhere become perennials here. Our nighttime temperatures, often staying between 75-80°F even in 'cooler' months, mean plants grow vigorously year-round, requiring different management than temperate zones. For instance, while others are thinking about dormancy, I'm often planning my next succession planting for quick-growing vegetables. When considering 'zone 12 plants,' it’s helpful to think in terms of resilience to heat and humidity. I've found that plants like certain varieties of peppers and tomatoes, especially heat-tolerant or cherry types, truly thrive. And don't even get me started on herbs like basil and lemongrass – they practically explode with growth! For tropical flowers, hibiscus and vinca are absolute superstars, providing continuous blooms that really brighten up the garden. A crucial tip I've picked up, which is also highlighted in many 'Before You Plant' guides for Zone 12, is consistent watering. Because of the intense sun and warmth, watering deeply at sunrise helps plants absorb moisture before the day's heat sets in. Adding a good layer of mulch is a game-changer for holding moisture and encouraging strong root systems, which is vital for these fast-growing tropical plants. This also helps suppress weeds, which can be prolific in our conditions. For those interested in starting plants indoors, it's a great way to get a head start, especially for things that might need a bit more protection in their early stages, even in our warm climate. I’ve had success starting delicate flowering plants like Vinca or even some Bougainvillea cuttings indoors before moving them to their permanent spots. It ensures they establish well before facing the full intensity of our tropical sun. This method can really boost your success rate for more sensitive varieties or when trying to propagate. Also, don't forget the importance of soil. Our rich soils are wonderful, but replenishing nutrients is key with such active growth. I regularly add compost to ensure my garden stays vibrant. It’s not just about what to plant outdoors, but how you prepare the ground for it. Building healthy soil is the foundation for a thriving tropical garden. Embrace the hot, humid conditions; they are what make Zone 12 a gardener's dream! It's a truly unique experience to have such a diverse range of 'zone 12 plants' flourishing all year long.
