Zones Around the World ~ France Edition

Zones Around the World ~ France Edition

French gardens are designed with intention 🇫🇷

Think lavender humming with bees, structured herbs anchoring the space, and flowers chosen for both beauty and purpose.

France spans USDA Zones 6–10, making it ideal for fragrant perennials, Mediterranean herbs, and romantic cottage-style blooms 🌿

This is a garden style rooted in planning — not excess.

... Read moreAs a passionate gardener, I've always been enchanted by the serene beauty of French gardens, especially their perfectly structured lavender fields. My own journey to recreate a little piece of Provence in my USDA Zone 6 garden has taught me so much, particularly about understanding lavender's unique needs for both health and that classic, elegant shape. One of the most frequently asked questions I get is about lavender structure and how to maintain it. It's not just about aesthetics; proper pruning is vital for the plant's longevity and abundant blooms. I've learned that the secret lies in consistent, thoughtful pruning. For English lavenders (Lavandula angustifolia) like 'Hidcote' or 'Munstead', which are incredibly hardy in Zone 6, I do a light trim after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second, smaller bloom. The major structural prune happens in early spring, just as new growth appears. I aim to cut back about one-third of the plant's size, shaping it into a compact, rounded mound. This prevents the woody, leggy growth that can make lavender look untidy and less productive. French lavenders (Lavandula stoechas), with their distinctive 'bunny ear' blooms, also benefit from deadheading throughout the season and a similar spring shape-up, though they might be a bit less cold-hardy in the lower end of Zone 6. Now, let's talk about growing lavender in Zone 6. This can be a bit tricky, but totally achievable! The key, in my experience, is drainage, drainage, drainage. Lavender absolutely hates wet feet, especially in winter. If your soil is heavy clay, like mine was initially, amending it with grit, sand, or creating raised beds is crucial. I even built a small rock garden area specifically for my sun-loving Mediterranean herbs, which mimicked the well-drained, sun-warmed textures of a French hillside. Lavender needs full sun – at least 6-8 hours daily – to truly flourish and produce ample essential oils for that signature fragrance. In Zone 6, winter protection can be a concern. While many English lavenders are quite hardy, a layer of mulch (like straw or pine needles) around the base in late fall can provide extra insulation, especially for younger plants. I've also found that planting them in a slightly sheltered spot, away from harsh winds, makes a big difference. Understanding the natural lavender plant structure also helps. Different varieties have different growth habits. English lavenders tend to be more compact and mounding, while some Lavandin varieties (a hybrid of English and spike lavender) can grow much larger and more upright, making them fantastic for hedges. When I'm planning my garden layout, I always consider the mature size and shape of the specific lavender I'm planting. For example, I border my main path with compact English lavender, while a larger, more sprawling Lavandin takes pride of place in a sunnier, open spot. Seeing my structured herbs like lavender and rosemary thrive, attracting bees and filling the air with their calming scent, truly brings the spirit of a French garden to my home. It's a little piece of paradise, meticulously planned but appearing effortlessly beautiful.
