Chonnad, fragrant ivy with Thai way
Schnad, or the scientific name Vallaris glabra, is a perennial ivy in the trotter family, known for its tender aroma like new rice or pandan, so it is called "new rice flower," a folk tree that has a long-standing beauty and utility in Thai culture.
🌿 General characteristics
- Trunk: Solid tendrils with white latex, bark with slightly broken grooves, tendrils several meters away.
- Leaves: Single, gamry-ovate leaves, pointed tip, smooth margin, oily dark green.
- Blossoms: Into the axils of leaves, tips of branches, light white-green, thin petals, strong early evening fragrance, flowering March-May every year.
- Effect: Shape resembles a cow's horn. When old, it breaks to release the seeds.
✨ Benefits and values
- Fragrance: Bring flowers to bake water, soak rice, sweets, or make incense. It can be used instead of pandan leaves. The fragrance lasts long.
- Garden Adorn: Plant arch tendrils, fences, walls, provide fresh shade and aroma, good resistance to hot weather

🌱 Planting and care
- Light: Like sunny to semi-sunny. If fully sunny, will be very flowering and intensely fragrant.
- Soil: Thrive well in Sui loam. Well drained. Good salty and dry soil resistance. Do not like waterlogging.
- Water: Medium water, moisturizing, slightly more frequent in the dry season.
- Propagation: This is done by nurturing, branching, or seeding, easy to plant, durable, slow to grow but long-lived for decades.

⚠️ Important precautions in planting Schnad trees.
1. The latex has an irritating effect.
All parts have white latex. If touching the skin, it may make itchy, red, rash, and if it enters the eye, it may be severely irritated. Gloves should be worn when trimming or moving, planting, washing hands immediately after touching.
2. Do not eat all parts
It is classified in the trotter family. Some substances are toxic to the body. Leaves, bark, fruits or seeds should not be eaten. Although flowers can be used to bake perfume, they should not be chewed or eaten fresh.
3. Water and soil matters
Absolutely no waterlogging - roots rot very easily. Sui loam must be selected, well drained, planted in slopes or sand filled if the soil is too tight.
4. Location and slithering
It must be sunny for at least 4-6 hours / day. If the umbrella does not flower, and the strong vine slides far away, it must be prepared to support the facade or stable fence, not to press the building.
5. Pets and children
Place out of the reach of children and pets, to prevent unwitting eating or touching latex.
6. Trim
This is done during the pre-rainy season or after flowering. Do not cut too hard during the drought and wipe the latter tool so that the rubber does not stick to the hand or stick to other plants.
