Toddler Behaviors

As parents we often watch the behaviors of our children and wonder where they picked them up. Both good and bad behaviors are learned. My main goal with my toddlers is to raise caring, kind, gentle, and just good humans.

I feel as parents it is our job to guide and teach these things to our toddlers. Because as adults these values are hard to be taught; they’re foundational values. We often meet adults who are lacking of foundational values like kindness, responsibility, sharing, honesty, and gratitude. So as a parent I take it seriously to make sure my good boys become good men.

What are your thoughts on foundational values?

... Read moreAs you navigate parenting, recognizing key stages in toddler behavior is essential. One touching moment is when toddlers empathize with you. For example, when you express not feeling well, their instinct to comfort showcases their innate kindness, reflecting early signs of empathy. These small gestures highlight the importance of nurturing emotional understanding from a young age. Teaching foundational values—such as kindness and responsibility—shapes how they interact with the world. This guidance can lay the groundwork for their social relationships and personal development. Engage with your child through activities that reinforce these values. Role-playing scenarios where they practice sharing or showing empathy can be beneficial. Parents often ponder the long-term effects of these early lessons. Research indicates that children who learn empathy early are more likely to maintain those behaviors into adulthood. Moreover, instilling values like accountability and gratitude can foster a sense of community and inner peace as they grow. Parenting is undoubtedly challenging, but your commitment is what truly helps mold wonderful, kind-hearted individuals. Don't hesitate to share your experiences and strategies in teaching these values—your insights could inspire others in the community.

The image introduces the concept of distinguishing toddler independence from 'being difficult,' stating that most 'problem behavior' is healthy development in disguise. It sets the stage for understanding child development.
This image explains the science behind toddler independence, highlighting that autonomy development between ages 2-5 is a biological drive. It notes that resisting help and saying 'no' are signs of healthy development, per Erikson's theory.
This image describes behavior #1, 'I do it MYSELF!' refusing help. It explains this as building competence and self-efficacy, suggesting parents offer choices like 'Want me to help or watch?' to support confidence.
Toddler Defiance or Healthy Independence?
Before you label it “defiance” — pause. ⏱️ “I do it MYSELF.” Saying no to everything. Changing their mind three times in 30 seconds. Ignoring you completely. These behaviors feel exhausting and disrespectful. But most of the time? They’re not defiance at all. They’re independence showing up. 🌱
