Being 37 and still in aint what it seems... Lemon
Wow, 37. It feels like just yesterday I was dreaming up what my late thirties would look like. Sitting here now, headphones on, with a bit more grey in my beard than I anticipated (and a slight smile, despite it all!), I realize it's truly not what I expected. And honestly, that's okay. It's more than okay; it's a fascinating journey of discovery that's miles away from the neatly packaged narratives we often see. When I was younger, I imagined 37 would be this golden age of complete certainty. I thought I'd have everything neatly figured out – a perfectly linear career path, relationships flawlessly aligned, and perhaps even a secret superpower or two. Instead, I’m still navigating new challenges, questioning old assumptions, and sometimes, just trying to keep all the metaphorical plates spinning without dropping too many. It’s a constant process of recalibration, a dance between aspiration and reality that keeps me on my toes. Let's talk about the career aspect. Work-life isn't always the straightforward, upward climb portrayed in movies or success stories. There are pivots you never anticipated, plateaus that test your patience, and moments of 'what am I even doing with my life?' But amidst these, there's also immense growth and satisfaction in finding your authentic path, even if it’s a winding one that defies traditional expectations. Learning to value purpose over prestige has been a significant shift. Relationships, too, take on new dimensions. Friendships evolve, some fade, and new, deeper connections emerge. Family dynamics shift, and you learn to cherish the profound bonds while gracefully letting go of what no longer serves your peace. It’s increasingly about quality over quantity, and truly showing up for the people who matter most, embracing the messiness and beauty of human connection. Then there's self-perception. The societal pressure to 'have it all' – the perfect body, the perfect life, the perfect mindset – can be incredibly intense. But I've found a new kind of freedom in embracing imperfections. My body feels different, my priorities have definitely shifted, and I'm learning to be kinder to myself in ways I never did in my twenties. That internal dialogue, the way we speak to ourselves, is crucial. Cultivating self-compassion has become a daily practice. The big, audacious goals I once held sometimes morph into quieter, more meaningful aspirations. Is it world domination? Probably not. Is it cultivating inner peace, learning new things just for the joy of it, and truly appreciating the small, everyday moments? Absolutely. The 'squeeze' of life at 37 isn't about fitting into a predetermined mold; it's about extracting the rich, complex juice from every experience, good or bad, and savoring its unique flavor. I'm learning to lean into the uncertainty, to find joy in the everyday, and to celebrate every small victory, no matter how minor it seems. This age isn't a finish line; it’s a vibrant, ever-evolving chapter of profound self-discovery. If you're around this age, or even just approaching it, you might relate to the feeling that life keeps throwing curveballs, but also incredible opportunities for resilience, growth, and a deeper understanding of who you are. What about you? What has 'being 37' or your current age taught you that wasn't in the script? Share your own 'ain't what it seems' moments – I'd love to hear them!
