Fairytale places in Upstate NY part 2

Plan a New York roadtrip around the many fairytale places to visit!

Great Camp Sagamore

Located in the Adirondacks, this is a great example of the Gilded Age Great Camps in the region. It was bought by the Vanderbilt family and used as a private retreat too!

When you’re here you feel like you’re in a movie! Be sure to do the hike around Sagamore Lake while you’re here!

Olana State Historic Site

This gorgeous home that looks like a castle was designed by Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church, blends Persian, Moorish, and Victorian styles.

From here you can hike around the property and enjoy the views that inspired many famous early American landscape paintings! The grounds are open to the public until dusk.

The Roxbury Motel

This is definitely a fairytale place because it was designed to do so! You can stay in one of the whimsical themed rooms at this Catskills retreat in Roxbury, NY.

We stayed in Cinderella’s Gown and Dracula’s Fangs, both are EPIC rooms! There are several other themes to choose from, plus a private waterfall on their property!

... Read moreI've always been captivated by places that feel plucked straight from a storybook, and my recent visit to Great Camp Sagamore in the Adirondacks absolutely delivered! While Upstate New York boasts many hidden gems, this particular destination, a true relic of the Gilded Age, truly stands out as a fairytale escape. What makes it so special? For starters, its history is incredibly rich. Imagine a time when America's wealthiest families sought refuge from city life in grand, rustic retreats. Great Camp Sagamore was one such private estate, famously owned by the Vanderbilt family. Walking through its grounds, you can almost hear the echoes of lavish parties and quiet family moments from over a century ago. It’s not just a building; it’s a living piece of history, showcasing the unique architectural style of the era. The rustic wooden buildings, often featuring striking red accents, are beautifully preserved and perfectly nestled against a stunning natural backdrop. The setting itself is breathtaking. Picture a serene lake, surrounded by a dense forest, especially vibrant when the autumn trees burst into color – a sight I was fortunate enough to witness. The aerial view of Great Camp Sagamore truly captures its secluded, idyllic charm. It's easy to see why it inspired such awe and why it continues to do so today. The tranquility here is palpable; it’s the kind of place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in nature and history. One of the highlights for me was the hike around Sagamore Lake. The trail offers various perspectives of the historic lodge and the surrounding wilderness. It’s not an overly strenuous hike, making it enjoyable for most fitness levels, and the payoff is incredible views from every angle. You'll find yourself pausing often, just to take in the sheer beauty of the landscape and the architectural marvel nestled within it. My tip: wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera, because every turn offers a postcard-worthy shot! Beyond the hiking, I highly recommend exploring the camp through one of their guided tours. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable, bringing the history of the Gilded Age and the Vanderbilt family's life here to vivid life. You learn about the daily routines, the innovative designs, and the sheer scale of these 'great camps.' It really helped me appreciate the intricate details of the rustic Gilded Age lodge and understand its significance. If you're planning a visit, consider going in the fall to experience the spectacular foliage, as the surrounding forest becomes a canvas of reds, oranges, and yellows. However, each season offers its own unique charm, from lush summers perfect for lake activities to serene snowy winters. Be sure to check their official website for tour schedules and any special events, as they often host educational programs and workshops. Great Camp Sagamore isn't just a destination; it's an experience that transports you to another era. It's a testament to timeless beauty and the allure of the wild Adirondacks. If you're looking for a truly unique and memorable Upstate New York adventure that combines history, nature, and that undeniable fairytale vibe, this is a place you absolutely cannot miss. It’s more than just a visit; it’s an immersion into a piece of American grandeur.
