🍙 Tuna Rice Ball (Onigiri)

🧾 Ingredients

2 cups Japanese rice (or any short-grain rice)

2 ½ cups water

1 can tuna (drained)

2–3 tbsp mayonnaise

½ tsp salt

Nori (seaweed sheets), optional

Optional: sesame seeds or a little soy sauce

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Cook the rice

Wash rice until water runs clear

Cook with water (rice cooker or pot)

Let it cool slightly (warm, not hot)

2. Make tuna filling

Mix tuna + mayonnaise

Add a pinch of salt or a few drops of soy sauce if you like

3. Shape the rice balls

Wet your hands (so rice doesn’t stick)

Take a handful of rice

Flatten slightly → add 1 spoon tuna

Cover with more rice and shape into triangle or ball

4. Add finishing

Wrap with nori (optional)

Sprinkle sesame seeds if you want extra flavor

💡 Tips

Don’t overfill or it will break

Use warm rice so it sticks better

You can lightly salt your hands before shaping for authentic taste

The tuna rice ball recipe shared here highlights the perfect blend of savory tuna and creamy mayonnaise. When preparing the rice, always use short-grain rice as it has the necessary stickiness to hold the shape well. Washing the rice thoroughly until the water runs clear helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming mushy. One tip I’ve learned from my own practice is to wet your hands with slightly salted water before shaping the rice balls; this not only prevents sticking but also seasons the rice subtly. It’s important to work with warm rice—not hot—to maintain the texture and make shaping easier. If you want to experiment further, you can add chopped green onions or replace the mayonnaise with Japanese kewpie mayo for a richer taste. Some people also enjoy adding a hint of soy sauce or a small amount of wasabi into the filling for an extra kick. Wrapping the onigiri with nori not only adds flavor but also makes them easier to hold and eat. For those new to shaping onigiri, practicing the triangle shape can be a bit tricky at first, so don’t be discouraged if your first attempts aren’t perfect. Using a mold can help until you get the hang of manual shaping. Remember not to overfill the center, as a large filling pocket can cause the onigiri to break apart. Overall, this simple yet delightful tuna rice ball recipe can be a versatile snack or lunchbox favorite. It’s portable, filling, and can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature. Making your own onigiri allows you to control ingredients and tailor flavors exactly to your preference, making it a healthier and tastier option compared to store-bought alternatives.
