Better Than Koolaid Summer Refresher
There were times, up until the 1990's, when we hardly ever had Coke or any other type of soda with dinner or during the day here in Poland. Instead, especially in the summer, we had kompot, an easy, refreshing and healthy fruit drink. I still love doing it when fruit is plentiful and relatively cheap, and the days are hot. All you need is any seasonal fruit: strawberries, cherries, berries, on their own or mixed. This time I used sweet cherries, redcurrants and blackcurrants, altogether about half a kilo. I added 1,5 litre of water and five spoonfulls of sugar, brought it to the boil, then simmered for 10 minutes. Then you just chill it and enjoy the taste. No additives, no chemistry, pure summer in a jug.

There’s something truly magical about a glass filled with a vibrantly colored drink, especially when the sun is shining bright! While my kompot recipe uses the beautiful hues of cherries and currants to create a delightful reddish-purple, the world of colorful fruits offers endless possibilities for making your summer sips not just delicious but also incredibly appealing to the eye. I find that the visual feast of colorful fruit is often just as important as the taste. Think about those juicy red strawberries and cherries, the sunny yellows of sliced pineapple or lemons, the deep purples of blueberries, or the refreshing greens of kiwi. Each adds its own unique charm, turning a simple drink into a delightful experience. And it's not just about aesthetics; each of these vibrant colors often signals a different set of vitamins and antioxidants, making your colorful concoctions incredibly healthy! Beyond a traditional kompot, I love to experiment with various colorful fruits to keep my summer drinks exciting. For instance, I often make infused waters that are both gorgeous and hydrating. Imagine a pitcher of water with thin slices of oranges, lemons, and limes floating alongside a handful of fresh red raspberries and some mint leaves. The citrus adds a zesty tang and a beautiful spectrum of yellow and orange, while the raspberries provide bursts of red and a subtle sweetness. It’s so simple, yet so elegant and refreshing! Another favorite for showcasing colorful fruits is making homemade popsicles or ice cubes. I’ll chop up small pieces of watermelon, peaches, or even a mix of berries, and freeze them into ice cube trays with a little water or fruit juice. These colorful ice cubes are perfect for chilling any drink without diluting the flavor, and they look absolutely stunning as they slowly melt, releasing their fruity essence. For a truly tropical vibe, I sometimes use chunks of pineapple or a mix of tropical fruits like kiwi and mango. And let's not forget the power of garnishes! A simple drink can be transformed with a wedge of a vibrant grapefruit or a few whole figs on the rim. Even a heart-shaped slice of watermelon can bring a smile. When I see a bowl brimming with a colorful assortment of fresh fruits—like the mix of strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi I sometimes have on hand—I know I have all the ingredients for a show-stopping drink or a beautiful, healthy snack. The key is to embrace the natural beauty of seasonal produce. Picking ripe, brightly colored fruits ensures the best flavor and the most visually appealing drinks. So go ahead, get creative and let the vibrant colors of summer fruits elevate your everyday refreshments!
