The Lost Story - Meg Shaffer

Inspired by C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, this wild and wondrous novel is a fairy tale for grown-ups who still knock on the back of wardrobes—just in case—from the author of The Wishing Game.

As boys, best friends Jeremy Cox and Rafe Howell went missing in a vast West Virginia state forest, only to mysteriously reappear six months later with no explanation for where they’d gone or how they’d survived.

Fifteen years after their miraculous homecoming, Rafe is a reclusive artist who still bears scars inside and out but has no memory of what happened during those months. Meanwhile, Jeremy has become a famed missing persons’ investigator. With his uncanny abilities, he is the one person who can help vet tech Emilie Wendell find her sister, who vanished in the very same forest as Rafe and Jeremy.

Jeremy alone knows the fantastical truth about the disappearances, for while the rest of the world was searching for them, the two missing boys were in a magical realm filled with impossible beauty and terrible danger. He believes it is there that they will find Emilie’s sister. However, Jeremy has kept Rafe in the dark since their return for his own inscrutable reasons. But the time for burying secrets comes to an end as the quest for Emilie’s sister begins. The former lost boys must confront their shared past, no matter how traumatic the memories.

Alongside the headstrong Emilie, Rafe and Jeremy must return to the enchanted world they called home for six months—for only then can they get back everything and everyone they’ve lost.

... Read moreWow, if you're like me and constantly searching for that next captivating read, let me tell you about 'The LOST STORY' by 'MEG SHAFFER.' This isn't just another book; it's an immersive experience, truly a standout RNovel that perfectly fits the 'cozy fantasy mystery' vibe I adore, all wrapped up with characters you can't help but root for. From the very first page, the Narnia-esque inspiration shines through, inviting you into a world that feels both familiar and utterly new. It’s that perfect blend of childhood wonder with the complexity and emotional depth that appeals to adult readers. The 'cozy' aspect comes from this sense of wonder, the richly imagined setting, and the underlying thread of hope that runs through even the darkest mysteries. You feel comfortably nestled in its pages, even as the plot thickens. And oh, the mystery! It kicks off with two boys, Jeremy and Rafe, disappearing into a vast West Virginia forest, only to mysteriously return six months later with no memory of their time away. Fast forward fifteen years, and Jeremy, now a missing persons' investigator, is approached by Emilie Wendell. Her sister has vanished in the very same forest. This sets off a chain of events that pulls Rafe, the reclusive artist still bearing scars, back into the enigma. The layers of secrets, the unanswered questions – it's a puzzle you'll be desperate to solve alongside the characters. What truly makes this 'MEG SHAFFER' novel shine, and why you'll find yourself rooting for everyone involved, especially Emilie, is the emotional core of the story. Emilie's unwavering determination to find her sister is palpable. Her courage and resilience as she steps into this unknown, magical world make her an incredibly relatable and inspiring protagonist. You feel her desperation, her hope, and her resolve every step of the way. Rafe, too, with his forgotten past and internal struggles, garners immense sympathy. His journey of rediscovery, as fragments of his lost time resurface, is deeply moving. Even Jeremy, with his inscrutable reasons for keeping secrets, is a complex character whose motivations you'll ponder. Their individual quests intertwine beautifully, creating a tapestry of human connection, loss, and the search for truth. The 'fantasy' element is woven seamlessly into the narrative. This isn't just a forest; it's an 'enchanted world,' a 'magical realm' filled with impossible beauty and terrible danger. It's a place that both haunts and beckons, holding the key to the past and the hope for the future. The fantastical setting never overwhelms the character-driven mystery but enhances it, making the stakes feel even higher. If you’re looking for a book that transports you, challenges you with a compelling mystery, and introduces you to characters whose journeys will stay with you long after you've turned the final page, then 'The LOST STORY' by 'MEG SHAFFER' is an absolute must-read RNovel. It's a magical escape, a heartfelt adventure, and a truly satisfying 'cozy fantasy mystery' experience. Don't miss out on this one; it's truly special!
