Genova, Italy Recap
This is my fifth port for the MSC Europa Cruise.
The buildings and houses are built on the slope of the mountain. You can see the views of the Alps. My family and I rode around in the city of Genova for the beautiful views. We stepped off the bus to capture pictures.
At the end, we explored the Piazza de Ferrari. This area is surrounded my shops and restaurants. We ate Foocaccia in the nearby cafe. We walked to look at the Cathedeal of San Lorenzo. During our time there, there was a market which was selling various foods, clothes, and home goods. I bought authentic noodles from il Pesto di Pra, and I can’t wait to try. Genova is a beautiful small city with various things to do and see.
I often get asked, "Is Genoa, Italy worth visiting?" and my answer is a resounding YES! This city truly captured my heart as a vibrant, authentic Italian port that offers so much more than just a quick stop. If you're planning a Genoa vacation, you're in for a treat. It's less crowded than some of Italy's more famous cities, which means you get a more genuine experience. Beyond just riding around, as I mentioned in my recap, really taking the time to explore Genoa sightseeing opportunities makes all the difference. The Piazza de Ferrari, for instance, isn't just a big square; it's the buzzing heart of the city, surrounded by magnificent buildings and that iconic fountain, perfect for people-watching. And the Cathedral of San Lorenzo? Absolutely breathtaking! Its striped marble facade and intricate details inside tell centuries of history. I loved how there was a lively market right near it when I visited – it added such a local flavor, with everything from fresh produce to unique crafts. Finding those authentic noodles from il Pesto di Pra was a highlight, and trust me, you have to try the local focaccia – it’s a revelation, far better than anything you’ve had before! But Genoa offers even more for a memorable vacation. Don't miss the Porto Antico (Old Port), which has been beautifully revitalized. You can visit the Genoa Aquarium, one of Europe's largest, or take a ride on the Bigo panoramic lift for incredible views of the city and the sea. Another must-see is Via Garibaldi, a UNESCO World Heritage site lined with stunning Palazzi dei Rolli, former aristocratic residences that are now museums. Walking through these opulent palaces feels like stepping back in time. For foodies, Genoa is a paradise. It’s the birthplace of pesto, so make sure to try it on fresh pasta. The seafood here is also incredibly fresh and delicious, given its port city status. If you have a little extra time, a short bus ride can take you to Boccadasse, a picturesque ancient fishermen's village with colorful houses and a charming pebble beach – perfect for a relaxing afternoon. To truly appreciate why Genoa is worth visiting, embrace its labyrinthine alleyways (known as *caruggi*). You'll discover hidden gems, artisan shops, and traditional trattorias. It's a city that rewards exploration and offers a rich blend of history, culture, and incredible food without feeling overwhelmed by tourists. So, if you're deliberating where to go on your next Italy trip, definitely consider adding Genoa to your itinerary. You won't regret it!
